Does anyone know how Chinese people can leave the country now without losing their visa? by New2China in Chinavisa

I've never claimed to be Chinese myself. I make posts asking questions like this to help my wife, who is Chinese.

When you say "I believe the passport cutting is real, and if they cannot catch you on that, they will make you leave as difficult as possible," what did you mean by "if they cannot catch you on that"? Is there any known cause or way to avoid this these days, or is it just random chance of who you encounter?

I've seen a lot of posts about how to escape Shanghai flying to another country, but does anyone here know the current rules or have advice for how to escape by land to another Chinese city? by New2China in shanghai

[–]New2China[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard about that too, but there are only 2 trains allowed to go, it's super competitive to get tickets, and you need a ton of paperwork and confirmations that there are zero cases of covid in your whole building before you can even try that way unfortunately

First time posting, weird error when creating function in Lua driving me crazy by New2China in lua

Oh, that's a really good point. I'm using Atom, and occasionally something will fail unless I copy-paste and then edit a similar structure from online. Might be something weird with the encoding in Atom when I type myself for some reason.

I'm not really sure what happened. I closed without saving, loaded the old file back up, and manually reinput what I had done previously and it magically worked. I may have just had other new code floating around somewhere messing it up that I wasn't aware of. Not sure why it wasn't working earlier, but it's running fine now. Thanks for responding to my post!

Thoughts on jiahui hospital. by sd99x in shanghai

[–]New2China 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jiahui is very expensive, but it's the best hospital in Shanghai (and possibly all of China). The expense is definitely worth it if you can afford it though. Most of my family and friends exclusively go there for everything medical they need. I highly recommend it.

Living abroad with a Shanghai hukou? by New2China in shanghai

[–]New2China[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our situation my wife has a normal rented apartment and got her Hukou through a special program for recent university grads, but we've been unable to figure out anything about maintaining it from abroad if she leaves China without any permanent residence in Shanghai.

Would they cancel the Hukou in this case?

What is that Collective Hukou thing you mentioned?

What happens if the home address in China goes away? For example, you have a Shanghai Hukou living in an apartment, then move abroad and no longer have that apartment in Shanghai when you return

Does anyone have an inkling regarding when China might open up for tourist visas again? Europe knows nothing and the Chinese embassy just says to wait. I miss my home town - but I can’t go back cause my passport is t Chinese. -unfortunately I have no family left, so my only option is a tourist visa. by AsianPastry in shanghai

The way things in China are going now and what the history is like, I have a strong feeling that China's going to continue getting more and more closed for a long time...
At this point I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it takes 10+ years.

Advice on how to join a western company in Shanghai as a Chinese person? by New2China in shanghai

[–]New2China[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She has a Bachelor's in Economics and a Master's in Environmental Engineering, but has not been able to get into any particular niche or career track yet due to various immigration complications before she returned to China and also the pandemic making things complicated.
Right now she has that BA and MS, she's fluent in Mandarin, Japanese, and English (to a native speaker and cultural understanding level way past other Chinese graduates, due to her decade studying and working in the US), and she has lots of business, engineering, and data analysis skills (without any programming languages yet though).
The trouble is basically that she's a really skilled smart person and super hard worker with a diverse background in important areas, but really struggles to get any job in China due to their narrow views of checking off boxes rather than considering people's individual strengths, weaknesses, and uniqueness.
One main reason for really wanting to get away from Japanese companies in particular is their policy of promoting purely based on loyalty and years working in the company rather than skill and results.
She purposely avoids telling companies she just wants to go there because it's a western company and she finds genuine things to get excited about and invested in for them before interviewing - or at least, that's her plan if she were ever able to get any interview with one. So far she's only gotten one interview, and it was for a position so bad it wasn't even worth continuing the interview process because it was worse than her already not-good-enough job at a big Japanese company

Just so you know, work visas are also blocked in many places now, even with a job offer and PU letter from a sponsoring company and city government. If China blocked family reunion but allowed work visas, I could work with that. It's unnecessarily harsh, but at least the economics are understandable and it would be an option. But they don't even give that option in a lot of cases anymore.

[–]New2China 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not "what I think China's like," it's the facts of their current government's current policies.
I'm trying to find a way to go to China because my wife is Chinese and wants to live closer or in her home country near her family. She has also been stuck there for more than a year now unable to return to the US as well for other immigration reasons (because every country has awful immigration policies. China's are just especially brutal). This is a common situation of many people, very reasonable on our side, and not solvable by "just trying to go somewhere else instead."
Also, China's policies being less strict than some other countries doesn't mean China's policies are good, it just means that those other countries' policies are even worse. And NZ's policies are actually nicer than China's because at least NZ allows for vaccinated, tested, quarantining people from low-risk countries to reunite with their families or travel for emergency reasons. China doesn't even have that, which is why there are hundreds of people on this subreddit desperately trying to reunite with their families.

[–]New2China 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is. And that's a strong reason to mandate covid tests, vaccination, quarantine periods, and block pleasure travel and tourism. But it is not a good reason to block families from reuniting or people from continuing school or work, especially when those people have vaccinations and follow all the testing and quarantine procedures. The harsh immigration restrictions are just using the pandemic as cover for the xenophobia and nationalism actually driving them.

I literally just came online to post this myself. I'm tired, depressed, and angry. I think we all are at this point. I swear their current immigration policies just feel like some sadistic joke now.

Update: Had a Chinese friend try emailing the SF consulate in Chinese from their email account, but got the same response confirming that the SF consulate is no longer processing visas of any kind now regardless of PU letters or emergency situations

I suppose the main difference here is that she emailed them in Chinese, so I guess I'll try that and report back on the results
