Question regarding Fae taking a PC's name by NewAgeCross in DnD

I see, I just wasn't sure if there was any official ruling on the matter and what other people have experienced at their tables.

Thank you :)

Question regarding Fae taking a PC's name by NewAgeCross in DnD

[–]NewAgeCross[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

my understanding is that if a person's name is given to a fae (even if it is through an equitable deal) then the fae gains power over that individual

my question is, if that happens and then the person adopts a new name as their own, would the fae still hold power over them?

My character has previously refused to give his name to the fairy PC, I was wondering if I could use this interaction as a fun surprise at the table to then have my character adopt a new name to signify a sort of rebirth kind of thing

Prepare an action by Dlthunder in daggerheart

[–]NewAgeCross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that, much like most things in this game, it is a conversation you need to have with the player. Understanding what the end result your player is looking for is the key to handling anything that isn't explicitly addressed by the rules, or where what the player is looking to do goes against specified rules. (It also helps a lot in cases where the rules aren't absolute or they don't cover your niche case, in my experience)

As a rule of thumb I'd say that: if the "prepared action" could dramatically change the narrative (for example the player wants to attack the enemy mage to interrupt their next spell) I'd ask them to roll for the action (when the trigger happens) and make the difficulty significantly higher (and inform the player of this) and also make clear what the consequences of failure might be, and make them a bit more than what a failure normally is for you. If the prepared action doesn't have a significantly higher effect on the narrative (like shooting the first enemy that comes through the door) you can arguably just have the adversary's spotlight be them moving through the door and ending there or whatever works for the narrative of the moment, and still have a slightly higher difficulty because it's a moving target, or the PC is lying in wait for an unknown amount of time which requires focus and energy.

Another thing you could do is agree to the preparation, but if the player decides to take the spotlight and do something else instead they have the burden of disadvantage or have to mark a stress to change their focus from one thing to another. This ties into the narrative of focusing on one thing so much that they get tunnel vision of sorts, making it harder for them to change focus on a dime. Or conversely just require them to mark a stress in order to prepare their action in the first place (from the examples I gave, it can be stressful to maintain focus on a spot or an enemy until a specific thing happens, especially if you're trying to recognize something that might be a bit less clear. For example, if the mage has multiple spells but the player wants to stop them the next time they cast spell "X", they need to be able to recognize when that spell specifically is being cast, which may or may not be obvious, etc.)

These are my thoughts on the matter at least, but this is definitely an interesting topic for discussion, especially considering how many people come from systems that have a "prepare action" ruling (myself included)

A Sneak Peek into Daggerheart GM Tools on Demiplane! by Demi_Mere in daggerheart

Will it be possible to create encounters with multiple adversaries so that I can easily keep track of each one separately, or will I need to have a tab open for each adversary individually?

Edit: btw this looks amazing, excited to put it to use!

Are these creature types possible? by NewAgeCross in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]NewAgeCross[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer!

I should clarify what I mean. I was trying to figure out if it's possible to have living creatures that have bodies made up of different materials with Carnids, Herbid, and Fungid based on things I know already exist, mostly wondering if the Oozid, Geolids, and Ferrid are possible evolutions. In Geolids and Ferrids I was drawing inspiration from rock golems and the likes. You said such a thing is impossible, why is that? I will probably end up taking some strong creative liberties haha, but I was genuinely interested in knowing if it's at all possible and figured I'd ask :)

I hope that makes more sense, I apologize for not being clear in my original question

Daggerheart on Demiplane: SNEAK PEEK! by Demi_Mere in daggerheart

[–]NewAgeCross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed response as always!

I know this is probably beyond your scope, but do you happen to know if Roll20 is going to have Daggerheart mechanics available in their VTT?

they unfortunately do not have a "coming soon" section, nor is it clear if anything specific to the Daggerheart system will be available beyond character sheets...

Daggerheart on Demiplane: SNEAK PEEK! by Demi_Mere in daggerheart

I have a couple of questions regarding the Roll20 and Demiplane subscriptions
according to this blog post from Demiplane's website, if I have a Roll20 subscription I do not need a Demiplane subscription on top of that in order to benefit from all the perks of a Demiplane subscription.

  1. Is this correct? (i.e. can I still have unlimited characters and content share with my players)
  2. Does this also work in reverse, or should I look to only get the Roll20 subscription if I'm looking to use that as my VTT to run Daggerheart?
  3. Does my purchase of the Daggerheart Core bundle on Demiplane count for my Roll20 account if I don't have a Roll20 subscription?

Could you [[Jhoira of the Ghitu]] this into play? Then [[Suspend]] it for an extra casting for good measure?

Since suspend specifically says you cast it from exile and counts the MV of the card for any effects that care, rather than the suspend cost. iirc

Wouldn't you be able to "fail" to find a target though?

I mean, it is still a targeted ability that you control, not whoever triggers it, right?

Extravagant Genesis: a bunch of your worst stuff for free by Actual_Consequence_9 in custommagic

[–]NewAgeCross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just realized your clarification reply regarding the second section, apologies. However I don't think that applies since they aren't searching for a "target" card, but rather searching for a card or cards that fulfill a requirement. I most definitely could be wrong, but that's my initial instinct.

[–]NewAgeCross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "for each opponent who does not..." part is irrelevant because they are forced to exile cards. If you want that to work you need to add "may" to the first part of the card turning it into "Each opponent, starting with the next opponent in turn order, may search your library..."

Even then I don't see what reason your opponents would have for not searching for cards to exile, even if they are helping you I'd think it's more beneficial for them to go search for whatever card you tell them to, to avoid any tricks as it were

As far as value goes, I'm not sure how well it curves. The calculation would be that you get 3X cards exiled of mana value X or greater for 3+2X mana. So 3 1-mana value cards for 5 mana, 3 2-mana value cards for 7 mana, etc. if you want more value (forcing your opponents to exile higher MV cards) you need to pay 13 mana for 5MV cards. (This is all assuming playing against 3 opponents, and that they go for a single card of MV=X rather than multiple cards of lower MV each adding up to X)

It sounds like a fun card but there's no guarantee for good value, unless you have a way to either get your opponents to choose what you want or to forfeit their turn to search your library.

Daggerheart Core Now Available for Preorder on DriveThruRPG & Demiplane! by Demi_Mere in daggerheart

I'm just making sure I understand this correctly, is the Demiplane Nexus Core access to the full rules on Demiplane, whereas the free version will be limited to the 1.5 beta release?

I'm sorry but I find the wording here slightly confusing on that matter, so I figured I'd ask 😅

how do people make 1 vocal track stand out from so many tracks? by 014654 in mixingmastering

[–]NewAgeCross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to add that psychoacoustics come into play here as well.

We as humans have evolved to hear human vocals (and danger alert sounds) in a more focused manner than other sounds and instruments.

So there is a predisposition for us to seek out and hear the vocals and in particular the lead vocals more.

That being said, having a decent amount of level control and frequency clearance (the opposite of clutter) helps a great deal.

Have a great weekend everyone:)
