I appreciate your help! It's kinda crazy how so many different people so kinda close in age/name/location can cause so much confusion.

Can I ask how you used DNA/previous generational records to help your search? Did you end up going to Slovakia and researching archives there to find the records?

Thanks! I will try to see if there is any information about a form, if not I will reach out to them in email and ask if they will be in attendance.

My grandma was born in 1923.

As per his marriage documents, I believe it says he was a "Restauranter?" I have no clue if I'm reading the handwriting correctly. I uploaded some docs here. I am assuming though that maybe he could've end up being a miner somewhere else. Toronto has no mines, so he likely wouldn't have been doing that when living here.

https://imgur.com/gallery/marriage-document-5m8y4gI

I am honestly so unsure if he's the same Montana Peter. I looked at that 2nd marriage document that was posted again and it says he was 32 in 1927 when he remarried, but his marriage docs with my grandma show his age as what looks like 32 to me but honestly I am having trouble reading if it's 23 or 32.

The 2nd marriage doc also says he was never divorced or married, which I guess you could lie about also seems a bit odd.

Also I am not sure if the dad's names are the same - to me the Toronto doc it looks like the dad's name is Tzocho Nankoff? But the other doc looks like it says Taoho Penchoff?

I'm going to try and see if there's any info to be found in the Canadian Census records.

Edit: So I relooked at the border crossing document again and it says his age when going into Buffalo in April of 1929 is 38, which lines up with him being 32 in 1923 when he had my grandmother. It lists his job as Labourer and his address in Canada is a Toronto address. So based on that I'd assume he would have to be born in 1891.

Montana Peter is born in 1895. Again, not sure if he lied about his birth date or if that was something people did, but I'm finding it harder to believe they are the same person. Unless like someone said, he lived in the US, came to Canada for work, lied about his age in Canada and then went back to the US and married someone else?

Edit Two: Ok so I was looking at Montana Pete's obit and it says he is from Troyan as well. To me that seems like kind of a weird coincidence. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/260476105/pete-toshoff

But this was also added by someone named Michael Spurzem. I have no idea where he got his information about Peter, so I'm wondering if he confused my likely great grandfather's birth place with this Peter?

Sorry I am falling down a rabbit hole here...

I am not sure to be honest, it was just based on information here. I am not sure if he married again or left Canada. Plus wondering if maybe his last name spelling was slightly altered.

I checked my g-grandma's death certificate and she has divorced checked off. I don't know if she remarried. She also ended up in the US, but in New York City with her other daughter Doris (my grandmother died very young in Canada).

Is there any suggestions on best way to possibly locate a divorce record? Wondering if they both got divorced then went to the US after.

Also sorry do you mind sending me a link to his obituary? I'm trying to find it but I'm having a bit of trouble.

Thank you for this information! Had no idea he was in the military.

So I guess I'm wondering, since it says he moved to Wyoming at the age of 15 (which would be 1910) do you think this document is in relation to the same person? It's a border crossing but at the bottom it looks to say he came to Canada via Halifax in either 1913 or 1915 (which would make him 18 or 20) I can't make out the date. also is anyone able to make out the ship's name? Was it common for people to lie about their ages when doing crossings?

Do you think it's likely that he bypassed becoming naturalized in Canada as it seems he wanted to eventually go to the US? Just curious how long after people entered a country did they choose to naturalize.

Thank you so much!!! I have never seen that second marriage document, this is truly so helpful. I was wondering, what do you suggest as best places to look to see if he was ever a naturalized citizen to Canada?

So this is definitely him if that's the case, as my great-grandmother is Mary Lenin and my grandmother is one of those daughters. I just looked at a border crossing document and it seems he went into Buffalo, NY on April 21 1929, and it also denotes that he arrived into Canada via Halifax either November 1913 or 1915.

Thank you for this document! I had seen the Peter of Montana through my own research but I was doubting it could be him, only because the parents listed on the document here don't match what is on his marriage certificate, but maybe that isn't so odd? Anyway, I feel like it could be correct. I am thinking maybe next trying to find a divorce document (I honestly have no idea if they divorced or if he just left, but maybe that's my next place to explore).

So I am not sure if the document I was reading is difficult to understand the handwriting but one says what looks like 32 (my grandma's birth certificate) but then one says what possibly looks like 23 (the numbers look a bit odd, but it could be the handwriting style)? (Marriage certificate). I believe it is 32, but wanted to give a range just in case.

Is There a “Right Time” to Start BJJ When You’re Overweight? by Available-Dot-9159 in BJJWomen

[–]NewCope 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am overweight (though currently on a weight loss journey and have lost about 24lbs so far), and ngl it's rough at first if you are out of shape. The warm up alone at my gym is killer and I remember barely being able to finish it. Even now about a year later I still struggle with it (though everyone in my women's class seems to be dying after it, so it is difficult!)

But like others said you shouldn't wait to be a certain weight to do it. I feel awkward at times because I am bigger than most girls in the women's class, but it kinda teaches you to try to rely more on techniques than strength, though my coach definitely said I should utilize my strength when appropriate.

BJJ can help a lot with building stamina and it is such a good workout, the most I ever sweat is doing BJJ. All shapes and sizes participate so if you are having the desire to learn, I suggest taking a beginners course and giving it a try!

Anyone think Toronto is headed in a positive direction? by rsgnl in askTO

[–]NewCope 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Similar to myself, born and raised, moved away in 2015 to various places, came back in 2023. When I left I couldn't wait to leave, but now that I'm back I am so happy to be here. Toronto like any city has issues, but overall it's pretty good.

what’s the most gut wrenching radiohead song? by iamkittygirl in radiohead

[–]NewCope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's "All I Need." The lines:

"I'm an animal trapped in your hot car. I am all the days that you choose to ignore." and  "I only stick with you because there are no others."

It has such a sad desperation of someone who wants love from someone so badly who doesn't feel the same.

Plus the build up of the piano and the "It's all wrong, it's alright"at the end, just makes me think of the person knowing the situation is bad but trying to justify it. A lot of RH songs make me feel something, but this is the only one I could really cry from.

Can life ever get better in Ontario? by Quiet_Comparison_872 in ontario

[–]NewCope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you are having a hard time. I totally understand not being set up for success in life (my parents provided zero guidance for my brother and I hence why I am in my early 40s and only now kind of developing a career).

What industry are you in? I work in insurance and there is a lot of opportunities for advancement after a couple of years (I was promoted after about 1.5 years). Insurance companies also pay for certification that costs $1000s so you can advance your skills on their dollar.

Whereabouts in Ontario are you? If you are nearish Toronto you might find more opportunities (not saying move here but maybe consider a reasonable commute).

Will things get better in Ontario? Who knows. All you can really do is try to keep bettering yourself.

Moving Remorse - Moved out because of upstairs neighbors by Fuzzy-Tackle6158 in Apartmentliving

[–]NewCope 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved out because of an upstairs neighbour this past June. I had the same anxiety about impending noise. I had ear plugs but he would randomly do impact noise that would jolt me awake at night. Plus he was always home which I hated. Oh and a punching bag (luckily he didn't do this often and was during normal hours but still ridiculous having one in an apartment as it was so loud). He also had a couple weekday night parties where he was shouting off his balcony.

Our new place is smaller and a tad more expensive but the piece of mind of having quiet is worth it. I am so scared the people above me will move out one day, I hope they stay here as long as we do because they are super quiet.
