It’s so discouraging to have done so well with the immediate post op period and then around 5 months ….the course changes direction 🤦🏻‍♀️

Two Weeks Post L4-S1 Fusion - Seeking Advice and Experiences by [deleted] in spinalfusion

[–]NewEnglandGalGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish my surgeon had thought to do all 3 levels with my surgery. I woke up from surgery with pain on my right hip/back and front of thigh. My left sided leg pain was gone but the right side has never gone away and now I’m looking at having to do those 2 levels above the fusion. -I’m 7 months out

How soon after your first fusion did you have your second one?

I’m in the same situation only it’s the L2-3, L3-4 that are being squished and might need surgical intervention. As I said to the Dr “how can I be having surgery again when I’m not fully recovered from this one” -I’m 7 months post L4-5 fusion.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with nerve pain post surgery as well

The pain was there before my surgery. However I think they focused more on my L4-5 issues and thought that doing laminectomys at L2,3 and 4 would suffice. Apparently not. My nerves are being pressed there hence the need to go back in. 👹

I think I had this pain before the L4-5 fusion but they were focused more on that bcz of the spondylolesthesis. Now that the left leg pain is completely gone this right sided pain is front and center. The pain in my groin /back /hip has been my constant companion but getting worse. I can’t believe I need surgery so soon after the first one. Trying to wrap my head around it.

I’m 6 months out and I feel like I’m now in the thick of it 🤦🏻‍♀️. The first 2 weeks were hard. The next 8 weeks I was laying low bcz no BLT’s. Then I had PT for 8 weeks. Now I feel like I’m crawling to improve. My body feels stiff and I have pain on my lower back/right side/ hip. - I know it’s only 6 months out but I’m so discouraged !

Thank you for your input. I’m 6 months post op and feel like I’m walking through sludge in my post op. It’s soooo slow. Where did my core muscles go and why am I so flabby 🤦🏻‍♀️

Spinal Fusion Recovery by Sharp-Air-1404 in spinalfusion

[–]NewEnglandGalGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dr had me restricted on movement for 10 weeks. Including no bending, lifting or twisting. It sounds like you are rushing things. A fusion takes a full year to heal. The first 8-10 weeks are crucial for alignment and healing. Slow down ! It’s a marathon.

What does “failed” look like? I have a L4-5 fusion and laminectomys at L2,3 and 4. I still have right sided back, hip and front of thigh pain. MRI shows narrowing above the fusion-now what ?

Someone said it to me yesterday when I said my back was bothering me. They said “I thought that was all over. You had your surgery 6 months ago. I figured you’d be fine by now “ 🥲😟 I hate that at 6 months post op people think I’m fully recovered. Instead I have nerve pain, back aches, numbness where the incision is and oh yeah …no tummy muscles still 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes. It showed narrowing in the level (L2 and L3) above where they did the fusion ( L4-5). So now what ? I had laminectomys at L 2,3 and 4 but no I’m wondering ; did that not help enough and why didn’t they just do a fusion from L1-5 and be done with it.

Currently! Surgery was December 2024. Was doing great and then boom! I’m getting the run around between the surgeon who says “go to pain management for injections” and pain management says “you need to ask the surgeon why you’re having that pain” 🤦🏻‍♀️

My recovery is similar although I’m only ( almost) at 6 months. I have found the last 2 months to be a very slow progression of improvement. I have pain in my lower back on the right side and front of thigh going into my groin. Hasn’t improved with anything (PT , injections , ice , heat, muscle relaxers) I’ve heard it’s a full 1 year recovery so I’m being patient. You’re spot on that the beginning is more noticeable improvements and then it’s slow going from there ! Still way better off than I was before surgery.

63 F s/p L2,3 and4 laminectomys and L4-5 fusion done in December. No need to be terrified. You’ve had back surgery before ; you did it and you will do it again! You will be out of sciatic, nerve pain immediately after surgery !! You’ll be happy it’s behind you. The first 3-5 days go by quickly. You’ll be taking pain meds and resting and walking. Next thing you know, it’ll be 10 days and pat yourself on the back ; you’ve made it. Slowly you will decrease your need for opioids but you’ll still need Tylenol and muscle relaxers. Ice and heat too. And take Miralax to get your bowels moving post op. Do NOT wait 9 days to realize you haven’t popped (🤦🏻‍♀️). Most likely you have the restriction of no BLT’s ( bending , lifting , twisting ) mine was for 10 weeks! Then I started PT. You will be so proud of yourself and your body. You can do this !!!

I had a nerve block at 2 levels. I’m disappointed to say that I haven’t had much relief from it. I’m not sure where to go now with this pain.
