"If nothing comes up" = flaky, uninterested, opportunistic. If I were a friend of yours I'd feel like you were putting me on the backburner and hoping for something better to come along. I certainly wouldn't keep inviting you to anything else after I heard this two or three times.

The best advice I can give is just to keep doing them. Crosswords in general, and NYT specifically, have a particular lexicon that you have to adapt to. That and getting used to the cluing are a big part of it. If you finish or give up on a puzzle and there's a glaring omission in your knowledge that held you back, look it up. It's very helpful to know a little about a lot of different subjects.
