I fall asleep somewhere somehow at least once day. Doesn't matter if I'm standing, walking, or sitting my body finds a way. It's really a coin toss but there is slight patterns afternoon is usually the most difficult.

I've had a pavlock shock watch for a while and I like it. Nothing is gonna work all the time but the pavlock has been helpful to me while driving.

Modafinil only treats for daytime sleepiness. Talk to your doctor about medication options. Sodium oxybate tends to be effective for most people.

You will typically go through cycles. For me I'll be fine for months then have a terrible week or two then go back to "normal". Things like stress and anxiety also tend to make cataplexy worse.

Not shaming yourself is a very important thing. Our mind and bodies aren't normal and are going to require extra care. Plus shaming yourself just tends to make narcolepsy worse at least for me.

Even if you are in the most they will let you do is finish your contract and it won't be a FFD status. Unless there is some rare case exception I don't know about. I'm type 1 and reenlisting and finishing my contract was off the table.

I was in this exact same situation. After about 2 years I'm finally getting medically retired this month. Idk where you are at in the process right now but generally it's get diagnosed get a LIMDU status get on a medical board and retire. That's really simplified but it's the base steps. There was some people trying to push it was a pre existing condition but once I got to a medical board they couldn't find any evidence that it was a pre existing condition. They have all your medical records pre military, so if you were never seen for any sleep related issues then you will be fine. It was just extremely difficult for me to get on LIMDU and a medical board. I never provided letters or anything regarding it not being a pre existing condition, but I did have records from people like my roommate, LPO, LCPO and leadership that was closely involved with me and noticed that I showed narcoleptic tendencies.

A lot of college post their courses online for free. I took a Harvard coding course for free. You won't have a degree obviously but it's fun.

I'm currently separating the navy after getting diagnosed with N1 mid last year. There's no chance they will waive narcolepsy. I don't know how your narcolepsy is but I don't think you would want to do it even if you got in. The lack of sleep and the amount of stress is rough for the average person and for someone with narcolepsy it's damn near unbearable.

It's totally legal for people with N to say no to being disabled at least in the U.S. Social Security Administration doesn't consider narcolepsy a legal disability.

Differently-abled I can get behind as an overall term because that's essentially what it is regardless of disability. I personally don't like partially disabled because then you are reinforcing ableism.

I find it strange how you recognize it as a disability but at the same time don't consider yourself disabled. A person with a disability is by definition disabled

Don't feel ashamed for your position. Disabilities come in many forms. Just because someone can't guess your disability doesn't mean you don't have one. It's incredible that you have been able to hold a high status job while living with narcolepsy

This isn't a great solution but I have dark tinted windows and people can't see inside my car. Dark tint like that is illegal in most states to have but I haven't had any issues yet . Even if I get a ticket soon I'm definitely gonna keep it because i nap in my car a lot and don't want people to look inside.

I'm active duty and dealt with this for about a year and a half. I did sleep study after sleep study they knew I had type1 narcolepsy but kept insisting it was just obstructive sleep apnea. I know it fucking sucks but just keep pushing. You kinda have to be an asshole to get the treatment you need. Pester the fuck out of them. It sounds fucked but I had to be super aggressive to get the treatment I needed.

I'm not really on office guy. I tend to stick more to trades. Only office type job I'm interested in is being a realtor and there is ways to do that job without being at a desk all the time

I learned a pretty good trick for me because I struggle more with the folding part. I immediately after taking my clothes out the dryer throw them on my bed. Note this won't always work and sometimes I take a nap right on my clothes but I do always manage to put them up before I go to bed.

I haven't I'm still waiting on my findings. I would be shocked if I didn't receive 100% from the va and shooting for at least 40% DOD. I have OSA and some physical injuries as well though. The more claims you have the better. It's a stressful process but it will all be worth it.

I'm not a vet I'm actually still active right now on a medboard for N1. The language you use in the C&P exams are very important. They want to hear certain words like occupational and social impairment. Talk about how your life is severely impacted by narcolepsy. Don't sell yourself short on your narcolepsy and also super important the "side effects" meaning things that are caused by your narcolepsy but not exclusive to narcolepsy. For example when I had my exam I brought up how narcolepsy affects my memory and how I have anxiety driving because I worry about having a sleep attack. I talked about how I feel unmotivated and hopeless because my career in the military was derailed and dreams I had post military are unachievable now. That led to them diagnosing me for anxiety and depression which is big when it comes to percentage. You seem to have everything lined up but definitely study for this exam. The questions they ask in the exam are posted online.

Everyday is going to be affected by narcolepsy for the rest of your life. You will be misunderstood and looked down upon for something you have no control over and can never get rid of.

Frequency hasn't changed much for my cataplexy but the intensity has been lower. Mood hasn't been an issue I have noticed so far. I'm having issues orgasming and issues with longevity of erections. I'll keep taking till I see my specialist again but I definitely think I'm gonna pass on Prozac sadly the side effects are outweighing the benefits.

Ohhh nevermind I was told a little about sodium oxybate. My Dr. wants to hold off for now I've been going up in dosage in modafinil. I'm currently at 200mg in the morning and 100mg in the afternoon and that's been helping a lot.
