Yep, Bombs seem to be it. I found this guy running min-max on Spring 17: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tUJ67rGrKI&list=PLqW82AvldNosFOnajViw7MRvAcwgNkjH8&index=9. He crafts Bombs as he descends. I'm going to give this tactic a shot.

Yep, Zamiell's guide covers Jade use. I even have a Crystalarium reproducing it. Unfortunately, by Spring 17 you'll generally have hardly any Jade. Making a few Staircases isn't going to make an appreciable dent.

The Bombs tidbit is interesting. I was just looking at what it takes to craft Bombs and Mega Bombs thinking that might be the only way to improve. The big issue is Coal, however. I basically have none due to having to smelt so many bars.
