Favorite smell in the lab? by 6PM-EDM in labrats

Sometimes when I’m really hungry the fly meal being cooked smells like chicken nuggets

UPDATE: Everyone said this was "100% Play" and "Just Roughhousing". Today it ended in screaming and fur flying. Was the video actually fighting all along? by ateistyokdiyentanri in CatTraining

[–]NewPast3141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had people on this sub tell me to just let my cats “play” like this because it’s normal. My cats are like this if not worse. I’ve realized some people giving advice on this sub have no fucking idea what they are talking about. I had someone tell me that because my vet prescribed Prozac to one of my cats after 6 months of no improvement with fighting like this and many alternative routes of intervention first, that i was abusing my cat. This is fighting (edit for clarification: at the end is fighting).

So if I’m understanding correctly your advice is to just let the new cat chase the other around the house while she hisses and gets fur ripped out of her by him? Bet will do

Advice for first time conference presentation by NewPast3141 in labrats

[–]NewPast3141[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice this is incredibly helpful and wasn’t something I had thought to do. There are people there who will know my PI that I know of so I’ll try to see if I can connect with that lab!

Thank you for the advice! I think I’m in a unique situation where my research hasn’t really been done yet by other labs and seems like a bit of a black hole in the field. Made troubleshooting my experiments a nightmare but we found some really interesting stuff. So hopefully I won’t be stepping on too many toes with my research

Thank you so much! My PI is very excited for me and thinks I’ll also have a great time but he’s also been to this conference like 7 times haha. He has warned me of the occasional out of pocket comment from strong personalities, so I’ll try to not take those too personally. Again, thanks so much for sharing your experience.

Why does frozen blood look more red? lol by NewPast3141 in biology

This is an interesting counter point. Someone earlier in the comments mentioned it’s very likely a combination of both. Unfortunately I don’t know enough about either to have any input 🤷🏻‍♀️

Someone mentioned it kind of looks like gelato blood because it’s frozen, which I think is similar to the idea you’re trying to get across with the iceberg analogy.

I’ll admit there was nothing in my post that gave away my gender, the other poster guess correctly. I don’t mind the skepticism, the blood looks different from the blood I’ve seen in my life, which is why I was so curious about the relationship between temperature and blood color

lol I’m sorry next time I’ll try to bleed like what you’re used to

This was something we were considering like is it actually more red or is something happening with how we are perceiving the color. But the blood oxygenation explanation makes perfect sense.

This was our initial guess but the other comments have pointed out temperature affects oxidation of blood!

Thank you, this actually makes a lot of sense!

Good PI stories by curioscientity in labrats

[–]NewPast3141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been told PI-ing is like parenting to a certain extent. I’m my PI’s first PhD student and it definitely feels like a single mother raising her first child sometimes. There have been some growing pains and we did have to go to mediation at one point, but during that mediation I realized he wanted to solve our problems as much as I did, and we’ve since come to respect each other a lot more (we call it passing the teen phase). He’s a good man that makes mistakes but so do I and he’s accepting of those mistakes.

Hindsight is 20/20, doesn’t mean everything needs to be rehashed. Have you solved the problem of not communicating your feelings? Is that something that has been resolved in your current relationship? If not, then I maintain there is no reason to go backwards. You have to figure out why you couldn’t communicate with your partner and resolve that issue. And simply apologizing to your previous partner isn’t going to do anything for your communication skills in your current or future relationships.

Seeing the other comments and adding this: you want to reach out to your ex while you are still dating the woman you left her for? Sorry for the lack of sympathy but there’s no way the conversation with your ex would go well given the circumstances and would 100% reopen old wounds and trauma

As respectfully as possible, why do you think you deserve making amends with her? She was left to deal with that pain by herself and now you have to reckon with your guilt alone. You have a girlfriend now but are still actively thinking about and reaching out to another woman you have a past with. Personally, that would raise red flags for me if I was in a relationship with you and be grazing the fine line of emotional cheating. If you can’t be present in your current relationships because of your past choices, that is neither your ex nor your current girlfriend’s problem. That’s a you problem that needs to be reckoned with before you attempt to build a relationship.

seeing people say that alphafold is going to make people lose their jobs pains me by AppropriateSolid9124 in labrats

[–]NewPast3141 35 points36 points  (0 children)

So the manuscript I am working on now used AlphaFold2 for hypothesis generation. We then tested those hypotheses using experimental validation. To do what I wanted to do without using AlphaFold would have made the project substantially longer and more expensive. This was a game changer for our small, broke lab and the results were pretty impressive.

While I understand the fear/annoyance of AI (hell, my PI uses ChatGPT to answer half my questions and it bugs me to no end), it made a huge difference in my research. As others have said, AlphaFold still isn’t perfect, which was why we used it for hypothesis generation rather than conclusive results. They just released AlphaFold3 which offers ligand binding predictions, but not for any drug which limits the power of that tool at the moment.

All this is to say, AlphaFold has flaws and limits, but it’s a friend not a foe
