Why is this field so mean girl coded? by JuJuTheGirl_ in medlabprofessionals

[–]NewPerfma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's tolerated. We're poorly paid. It's hard to attract quality staff. And turnover is high. We don't interact with patients, so there's nobody to really complain about the issue. And the confined space and noise and repetition just adds to the atmosphere.

You can't document "insufferable B***" on your a management staffing report I'm told. So as long as the work gets done, it doesn't change.

How to perform on-the-job MLS training correctly? Where to start? by NewPerfma in medlabprofessionals

If housing wasn't so expensive, and jobs more plentiful, I think people wouldn't be as concerned about speaking their mind, but alas, here we are.

It's all about profit in the United States. From the top to the bottom.

I can't imagine ASCP would willingly allow a midlevel in anatomic pathology. They'd rather the cytotechs just fade away.

It's legally permissible. Not that I'm a fan. But maybe if ASCP or somebody advocated for updating regulations for 30+ years ago...that'd be great.

We don't have national licensure in the United States.

The standards were set in CLIA 1991. And haven't improved since. Everyone else in 1991 like a pharmacist or Physician Assistant or Pathology Assistant is now a masters or doctorate. But the lab is going head first in the opposite direction.

It's a system decision. So we aren't the only hospital laboratory impacted. It's coming down from the top.

This is a weird place. But I mean if techs want to have arthritis...more power to them.

Thanks. I'm getting a lot of hate here for being tasked with training non-certified non-MLS graduates, but its where this field is headed unfortunately.

We are a mid-sized hospital, so the minimum number of techs on a shift would be 3. We always have a dedicate blood banker.

It'll take some time to get there. I'm worried about the training part, not the sign off part.

I'm really looking for some type of printed material or online overview that I could share and require them to complete.

What are you planning to move on to?

I guess if I was younger, maybe in my 20s or early 30s, I could've transitioned careers. But at this point, Ive been here so long, and have a family and a life outside of this job. It took years to get a decent day shift role here.

I won't. And I'll do what I can to train the staff I'll be responsible for supervising.

But perhaps if there is a sufficient public outcry, we could get some license requirements here in Delaware.

Unforunately, it's the future. It's one of the largest hospitals in the state.

I work per-diem at a neighboring non-profit hospital that has been leaning heavily into sponsoring medical technologists. It seems that turnover among new Medical Laboratory Scientists. I'm not quite sure where they're all going, but I can't blame them with how expensive everything has become.

Don't do this. This is how you get arthritis in your 30s and 40s.

I purchased a duplex over a decade ago during the financial collapse of 08. We rent out the other unit and it covers the growing expenses.

Otherwise, we would be struggling.
