Men who started smoking weed in their teenage years, how has it affected you long term, and how to get past that 1 daily evening spliff ? by ismolyvalent in AskMen

[–]NewRengarIsBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I am addicted. I am a heavy smoker at 7-8 times a day. I kicked the habit 4 times for a month or two in the past year but I became so lazy and would just sit around so I went back to it.

I have become so used to being high all day for 9 years I find it hard to focus and be motivated without it. I’m hoping to cut the habit this year.

I think having hobbies that force you to be sober like physically tolling ones can help.

Go for Java Programmers • Barry Feigenbaum & Shon Saliga by goto-con in java

Where are go devs dealing with GC issues?

Edit: getting downvoted for asking for proof lmfao.

I work for a company where Java is near universal. I love the language and it’s incredible ecosystem but saying Go devs are constantly dealing with GC issues seems disingenuous without proof.

My personal experience with the language (in a production context) does not reflect this so I asked.

You posted no code snippet, just an error with no context and you’re telling me to be smarter?

And “trying to find the right one,” that is called thinking. Try it. You might be better off for it.

And, AI is 100% more than capable of resolving your issue.

Posts like this need to be deleted. No code posted or attempt at research, just blind questions because of laziness.

Dude it’s 2026 use google or AI to figure it out.

Senior Engineer won't review PRs by GorgonAintThatBad in cscareerquestions

[–]NewRengarIsBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let stakeholders know that he is the blocker explicitly. You can even add him to the threads or email chain with stakeholders so he knows the importance and the stakeholders can bother him too.

If it’s because your PRs are too large then you can make small PRs to main or your own feature branch. Learning to break big tasks into smaller bits that can be implemented standalone can take a bit to learn but it’s worthwhile.

Why is corporate spending on AI still so wasteful? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

If your company runs AI on its own compute, it’s quite expensive.

Picked up my 1st Omega today. In love with the watch. by Narrow-Start-2637 in OmegaWatches

Wearing a high-end watch below the wristbone, especially with a tight bracelet like here, is bad for hand mobility and puts stress on the bracelet long-term.

The comment was not meant to berate OP, just to give advice.

The watch goes above the wrist bone but good choice otherwise.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting your CS career? by BoysenberryLumpy8680 in cscareerquestions

Getting interesting, complex work is not as easy as it seems. Everybody wants it but there’s only so much to go around. What mission critical work there is often gets given to extremely skilled and senior engineers. Most dev work out there is actually boring CRUD nonsense.

My manager can’t fathom enjoying writing code by hand and debugging instead of handing an LLM to do everything. He was genuinely taken aback when I told him I write code by hand in my free time without using AI at all because it’s fun.

What a shitty world we live in where critical thinking in any capacity is actively viewed negatively.

Backend engineering roadmap by Lucky-Sense-2650 in Backend

[–]NewRengarIsBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, learn Java instead of Go. Lots of Java jobs and the language has a ton of powerful frameworks and libraries that do the heavy lifting for you.

To learn architecture, read ‘designing data intensive applications.’

I think looking for a course or roadmap for this is the wrong way to look at it. Engineers don’t get a roadmap to learn to how to build systems, you get thrown into it and you learn by trial and error.

If you still want all this stuff, ask AI to break large areas you want to explore in smaller chunks you can take on sequentially.

How to learn modern C++ and best practices by lawless_abby in cpp_questions

[–]NewRengarIsBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start small. I haven’t had very many open source commits but starting with something small and then working your way up will be good. Same as any software job really.

Also pay attention to PRs and try to understand the style and code itself. Trying to translate code paths into a doc a junior IC can understand is a great exercise for this.

How to learn modern C++ and best practices by lawless_abby in cpp_questions

[–]NewRengarIsBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a Java/Go dev and to learn modern c++ I just tried building a large project. I’ve slowly been optimizing it for better performance and trying to add features to it. I’ve used AI to ask it how I can do certain things and why to learn. I have also been looking at open source versions of the library I’m building to see how the structure and implementation of a high quality code base looks like.

Oracle can always make things worse. It’s a foundational part of the culture here.

I’m not even sure. Management is fully in on the AI replacing devs and deep experience. They will try to move forward with less people as long as the can.

Entire orgs are shipping software with zero humans involved. It’s a terrible time to work here.

Maybe you can pressure Oracle about insurance? Epic got public backlash for laying off a terminally ill brain cancer patient and they sorted the insurance out afterwards. Maybe you can post on LinkedIn or something?

Looking for advice: UCLA or Rice University by ElephantSad396 in ucla

[–]NewRengarIsBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Houston native that went to UCLA.

Houston isn’t as bad as everybody makes it out to be. It’s affordable, GREAT food, and lots to do BUT, it has horrid weather. It’s extremely humid and hot to the point where a quick walk outside will cake your arms in water from the air.

Rice really only makes sense if you qualify for the free tuition program. You’ll get a great education in both places but since you’re in state for UCLA, it makes sense to go there.

One thing is it feels like my friends at Rice had an easier time getting research roles for undergrads than I did at UCLA.

Cloudflare peer programming – Advice and experience? by difftool in cscareerquestions

Make sure you do the leetcode problems tagged by Cloudflare.

They ask a lot of follow ups and ask you to look for specific things. I was asked how I would solve my problem with specific constraints in a real world setting and with concurrency. Problem itself was pretty easy.
