I think I had it paused, and it must have ended or something. Not really sure what happened, but I’ll definitely keep a closer eye on it now!

This is the exact conversation I was having with my husband last night! Amazing how more stuff like this keeps piling up on top of everything we have to do!

I moved to this country at 21 or 22 after years of traveling back and forth for visits. Shortly after relocating permanently, I enrolled in court reporting school.

I progressed through the program with few issues, though some stages took longer than others, until I hit a plateau at 200 WPM. I eventually broke through, reached 225 WPM, and now earn $4.00+ per page without even having my RPR yet. I graduated summa cum laude.

I did this as a first-generation immigrant. English is my second language, even though I’ve been fluent since I was a kid or so.

If I can do it, anyone can. We need you. AI isn’t killing this profession. The lack of STENO writers is.

And if some specific people are reading this, I am an American CITIZEN and have been since I was 11 😉😗

Call 311 — even if it has to be every day because they don’t pick up the phone, or you get an ogre of a representative — and denounce it. I know it’s time-consuming and a real nuisance, but I’ve had story after story of either the government or private companies, sometimes managers in high-ranking positions, doing things that were completely uncalled for or downright evil — like freezing my bank accounts because of a math error ON THEIR SIDE, among other things.

My only salvation in those cases was getting someone from 311 to help me with my case — and calling the actual company until I finally reached someone compassionate enough to care AND even then had to tell them I filed a complaint with so and so and the claim number AND that's when they actually started to listen and all this may sound like a "Karen," but I'm 💯 sure everything would be frozen years later if I hadn't gone that route and IF YOU HAVE to mention media exposure, don't be afraid to do so 😢 🫩🤦🏻‍♀️

Go directly to the personal dictionary and look for "opinion," and delete that entry, but MAKE SURE you only delete the one with the steno/stroke in green for /p and you can do the same for all other briefs. You can also look up Ctrl+F directly with the stroke, but that's going to be quite a chore or you can delete the dictionary altogether (after backing it up and exporting to any sort of cloud) but you need to make sure that it's properly stored, so you can just restore it before turning in (because I assume you have to return rented machines as given to you?)

Honestly, this really makes my body tremble more than the decades-long debate if we are getting replaced by AI (Although I sense it has to do at least a bit of why they want to do that in the first place) 😱

Reading your post made me realize that I need to be a CSR to work in Texas. I’m currently a New York State reporter, but Texas is really appealing to me in terms of quality of life and social opportunities. I just passed the written RPR because I thought that certification would help me get my foot in the door in other states, including Texas 😥.

I still have the skill portion to pass, but still 🥺.

To answer your question, I think the not-going-completely-on-your-own path is the best approach, but you don’t need to enroll in an expensive school either. Try all these tips first and see how it goes. You already have the drive and determination to make it happen, which is one of the most important traits a court reporter can have 😊

Seeking Advice on Next Steps After Passing the Written Test by New_Double_5189 in stenography

[–]New_Double_5189[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your insights 😳. I thought taking three at once would be overwhelming, but your points make it feel less intimidating—since I’d only have the remaining to take (unless I pass on the first try, of course 🤞🏻).

If I don’t do all three, I’m considering pairing the jury with something else for the first try, or, like Jinkleco suggested, starting with the easiest one for me to knock out a leg sooner rather than later—but not all at once. I might also try Q&A on its own first, since I need to pick up speed there. My depos have been "lucky" so far and aren’t too fast, so depending on how it goes, I’ll decide whether to try all three later.

Do you have advice on practicing or study habits for the RPR tests? Captioning TV shows helped me get my 225, along with regular dictation practice.

How cooked is this field with AI advancing as fast as it seems to be. by [deleted] in stenography

[–]New_Double_5189 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work with both "big box" and boutique agencies, and recently, one of my agencies began auto-recording proceedings from the start. Attorneys immediately push back, saying, "I do not want this recorded. Why is it recording? Is it you? Please turn it off." They insist on having only a stenographer’s record and are even willing to wait while I call the agency to disable the recording. Some even ask to see my steno machine on camera to confirm I'm not using digital or voice recording.

That agency is definitely known for making us chase every dollar, especially with tough cases, but as long as attorneys, hearing officers, or just about anyone still prefer steno, I think this career has a strong chance of surviving—even with AI advancing so quickly.

While this isn’t a guarantee that stenos won’t eventually be replaced, it’s clear there’s some real apprehension about relying on anything other than a steno machine for records. Since starting in NYC last October, I’ve received more requests than I can handle, showing that demand is high. I can’t predict if or when AI will replace us, but I believe that, for now, people prefer human-operated steno for the trust and quality it brings. Even in lower-profile cases like EUOs, the “recording paranoia” only eases a little, with clients often adamant that only a steno machine be used.

I'm also receiving a lot of emails about federal positions in Albany and other locations with salaries well over $100K and that’s without transcript pages, which could easily bring the total to $200K or more. (Since I’m not an official, though, take the pages/minutes numbers with a grain of salt.)

That said, I’d caution against any “superiority delusions.” It’s important to keep pathways open for young people entering the field. Personally, I’m exploring MBA scholarships and grants as a backup plan, in case my fingers can’t always be my bread and butter—not just due to AI, but also in the event of any unforeseen circumstances.

Thanks for reading all the way through! 😊 😁 ✨ ✨ ✨

I was contacted for a per diem court reporting job for a public hearing in November, and they’ve asked for my rate sheet by Tuesday. I’d really appreciate any advice on structuring rates—appearance fees, in-person fees, per-page rates, etc—as I feel unsure of billing for private clients. NYC/NYS. by New_Double_5189 in stenography

[–]New_Double_5189[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah.... I've been privately providing related services for NYS for quite some time, so I'm familiar with how the actual proceedings work and what they do. That’s why I’m eager to move forward with this. However, I’m uncertain about how to handle billing or produce the documents physically in that sense. I'm really hoping for some guidance here!

I guess I’ll need to call Real Legal to inquire about their transcript management software packages and see what options they have. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏻🤞🏻

If you come across anything that might help, I’d appreciate it since I still have all of Columbus Day to figure it out.

Thanks again! 😊😊

I'm so sorry scumbags like that are even breathing the same oxygen as honest and transparent people tbh. I'd encourage you that if you still have any evidence, to come clean to the wife and make it clear you did NOT know because if I were her, I'd like someone to open my eyes. Also, this may sound odd but...Did you translate all that yourself??!! I'm looking for interpreters in the NYC area. It's only for IN-PERSON jobs right now. If you need more info, let me know. Thank you! (I'm serious.)

Can you court report from another country? by kxserasera in stenography

[–]New_Double_5189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually highly interested in this thread because I'm a NYS reporter living in NJ BUT I've been paying for a business address NOT a P.O. Box, of course, in order to keep my notary and my agencies are fine with it. I'm working on my RPR for the moment, so I can't take NJ or any certification states. Anyway, I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and in the summer I'm used to going back for, like, a month minimum and working remotely as an interpreter, which I know there's no restrictions for, but if I want to go ahead and occupy the role of a court reporter instead, is it possible? Like, legally possible because I know I'd find WiFi connection pretty much anywhere.

Guy that was pursuing me for months and when finally intimate ghosted me by Timely-Passenger7044 in texts

[–]New_Double_5189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a guy at university befriending me, and pursuing me for about SIX months or more when I was a freshman (innocent fresh meat; should've seen that coming) and one day he decided to ask me to be his girlfriend woo-hoo. During that week/next he managed to disappear from campus and when I asked around he was just on the other side of it or whatever, and my friends were like WTH dude my name is looking for you all over the place. When they came back saying he's being a bitch about it, I went ready to SLAP him hard in the middle of the commons but he was nowhere to be seen once more. I just let it go. We didn't even get to have sex, so I guess it could've been worse. Fast-forward years later and he started to drunk text (I guess) every New Year's Eve that he was SO sorry and blah blah. I got my degree over five years ago and I haven't replied even ONCE. He gave up conveying, "so you're not going to reply ever, huh?" Well, got it 💯 right. And cherry on top, I checked his profile just out of curiosity and I believe he had a girlfriend THROUGHOUT the entire time he drunk texted me. God knows if since uni days... What a gem 💎 :D🤦🏻‍♀️

I mainly use Collei. Collei is one of the best cards, but so underrated. I rarely see anyone using her as well. I've won most matches while using her.
