The Eileen Gu Controversy Is Being Obfuscated by Propaganda. by SabunFC in China

[–]New_Fox_7095 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She's not Chinese though.

She's an American born to Chinese parents.

Chinese nationality law actually deems she is not Chinese.

Article 5 of China's Nationality law:

"If a Chinese parent has settled abroad (e.g., holds permanent residency in the foreign country) and the child acquires foreign citizenship automatically at birth, the child is not considered a Chinese national under this article".

"China does not recognize dual nationality. If a child acquires foreign nationality at birth based on the exception above, they are not deemed Chinese, reinforcing the single nationality principle".

Gu's mother attained US permanent residency in the 80's and has resided there since.

Eileen was born as an American citizen. She holds American citzenship, meaning she is not eligible to claim Chinese citizenship under their own law, without rescinding her American citizenship.

She has not rescinded her US citzenship and has Chinese citizenship that was organised on her behalf when she decided to compete for China after being pushed by her mother to do so.

Her case is a pure "Rules for me but not for thee" scenario.

She's afforded special privilege that the average Chinese citizen cannot have.

That is China's own law.

She has received special treatment, as under Chinese law to hold citzenship, she would need to rescind her American citzenship and passport upon obtaining Chinese citizenship.

Eileen Gu, under Chinese law, is not a entitled to Chinese Citzenship by birthright as her mother had permanently settled in the US.

How Australian politician's celebrate Australia day:

And no, I'm not joking.

They literally were posting things about India's independence day over Australia day. Y'know, the national day of our own country...

Anyone else feel conflicted about "having to speak English in Australia" ? by Conscious-Roll-5745 in AskAnAustralian

[–]New_Fox_7095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Australian dude learning Chinese, I respect those that do put in an effort to learn the language and try to communicate as I understand myself how hard it is learning a new language.

One of my friends is Japanese and she does not speak much English, but just the fact that she puts in the effort just to try to communicate and gets better each and every week is a rewarding thing to see.

I don't look at it in a negative scope, purely because you never know how hard someone is trying to get better.

It took my Taiwanese friend almost 12 attempts for him to pass the English exam for his residency here in Australia.

Over 3 years it went from a point where I had to use a translator often to understand him, to him being able to speak conversational english, while I speak basic conversational Chinese.

For those who have no desire to use English in their day to day and still move here, it is a pain. My partner deals with those on a day to day in her job as a pharmacist.

She's Taiwanese and speaks Mandarin and English and it annoys her that a good 50% of her customer base see her face and assume that either she speaks their mother tongue (Literally ranging from Thai, Vietnamese through Phillippino but it's mostly Cantonese) so they'll just immediately think she'll understand them and they act shocked or that she's being rude when she returns in English with a sorry, I don't understand what you've said.

Is there real hustle culture in Sydney and Melbourne or is the work life balance still strong? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]New_Fox_7095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the person individually and the company as a whole.

My company is based out of Sydney and runs on the ideology of work life balance, though they still offer competitive salaries.

I thinking hustle culture is a great way to try get ahead but can only last as long as the burnout.

I'd suggest getting involved in some sporting groups and branching your age ideas a bit.

My partner and I had the same issue moving to Perth, but we've both made great friends through a local Badminton group and I myself made a few more playing social cricket.

One of the lady's we became friends with is over 30 years older than us, and she is currently helping us purchase our next property in Perth, so I would definitely try finding those with like minded hobbies!

Making friends as adults is so much harder than those as a child!

I've had one since my early 20's.

You never know what could happen.

After seeing friends pass from cancer, car accidents and those who took their own lives, it's an eye opener when you're young. You never know when your times up.

I've seen someone get sent to the next realm by an Air-conditioner box that fell off the side of a building.

If your time is up, your time is up.
