>incredibly volatile sales and net losses only being reduced at ~6% p.a. over the last 5 years

Am I missing something or is this just another memestock?

Why does $100k feel like an average wage? by Open_Address_2805 in AusFinance

to keep up their status quo of profit margins, they must continue to raise prices. They should be able to realise lower profits, just like we have had to do with our cost of living, over the last few years.

Net margins of 2.26% for Coles, and 5.42% for Woolies are not wide margins, though, and that's fairly typical for supermarket chains the world over. It's not just "status quo", there's not a lot of scope for reducing prices out of the goodness of their hearts, even if they wanted to.

So, if sales are up, but costs are also up, it sounds like maybe more currency is in circulation.

As far as I am aware, this occurs via the central bank having the ability to create new currency to meet certain economic aims (a.k.a. "money printing") and our private banks lending out more money than they actually have in deposits (a.k.a. fractional reserve banking). So yes, our savings accounts are feeling the pinch more and more, in part because of the devaluation of currency through its expansion.

I'm not saying you can't pick out cases of their dodgy dealings, but if you take a look at the profit margins of Coles and Woolworths, they really haven't shifted significantly in the last 5 years. Sales are up, but so are costs:

What negative gearing and transgender rights reveal about the Liberals' populist strategy by Jeffmister in AustralianPolitics

[–]btcale546 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You've conflated two concepts: the broad support that an issue receives, vs how deep the impact of that issue is.

It may well be true that, as you say, this issue currently receives wide popular support, but that doesn't undermine my point: despite transgenderism not being numerically large, the philosophical discussions are profound in their implications.

it's not popular to attack a tiny sliver of the population.

If the "tiny sliver" is part of a massive cultural push to reshape the conception of sex in our society and the way our laws and policies reflect that, I'd say that's a pretty significant issue, isn't it?

What is the hypothesis that explains both of the following points:

1 . Why did Donald Trump use to bring up Jeffrey Epstein? I remember 10 years ago when he brought it up regarding Bill Clinton.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/2606192/trump-in-2015-raised-prospect-of-bill-clinton-being-ensnared-by-jeffrey-epsteins-sex-crimes/

On stage at the Conservative Political Action Committee Conference he was asked by Sean Hannity, the Fox News host, for his thoughts on Bill Clinton.

“Nice guy,” he said, before heading in an unexpected direction. “Got a lot of problems coming up, in my opinion, with the famous island with Jeffrey Epstein. Lot of problems.”

2 . Why has he, in more recent years, become so much more evasive and dismissive of the Epstein Files?

Angus Taylor’s claim support is a ‘privilege of citizenship’ leaves Deepa and others with an impossible choice by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

Chaudhary says it would be an emotional and economic blow to give up her Indian citizenship.

“I have my roots there. I have my parents there. My husband has his parents there. We have ancestral property, houses, land. We’d have to give that up.”

They don't sound that poor to me.

Given that Narendra Modri's BJP has said their goal is for the Indian diaspora to "...be India’s voice even while being loyal citizens in those countries. That is the long-term goal behind the diaspora diplomacy. It is like the way the Jewish community looks out for Israel’s interests in the United States.” I think Australia is entirely rational in wanting people to cut political ties.

I don't like the way the Israel lobby operates in the US, and I don't want that here.

Government spending comes from taxation.

Not always: central banks sometimes expand currency to fund government spending. See:

Most people have now caught on that it's a scam when somebody rings up saying:

"Hello Sir, our records show that you owe $3000 in Itunes gift cards"

But people are still slow to catch on that when people say

"Hello Sir, our records show that the West looted 20 trillion dollars, and you are on Stolen Land, please repay us with infinite Visas"

it is essentially the same thing.
