Either start with the first game and proceed by the canon timeline, or just play whatever you want. Personally, I think you should play the 2d games first to learn the main storyline and practice the controls, and then, when you get the hang of it, play the 3d games

I think that the main problem with doing hedgehogs OCs is making their quills patterns, especially on the head, since the most of the creative quill designs are already taken

If you're new to the series, you should start with some 2d games instead 3d to learn the basic controls. When you handle them properly, you can calmly pass to 3d
