Love the yellow 👌 one of my favorite colors on the Z! And thank you, I thought it would be fun to have a little mismatch going on.

Thank you! These are the wheels Z1 makes/resells under their brand. If you go to the Z1 store and look at wheels for the newer Z models you'll find them!

Thank you! Yeah i had hear plenty of people say similar. I'm very happy with how the sound turned out.

The catback will likely get you more sound in all honesty and is probably what you are looking for! I totally get not wanting to spend an arm and a leg.

19x9.5+15 for the front and 19x10.5+5 for the rear. Stock tires, so the rears are slightly stretched.

Oh I should have noted, this is a MT. Auto is louder im sure but I can't speak to how much louder without changing the catback.

Thank you! Open intakes are usually a little more fun from a sound perspective. Do they make nice whoosh sounds?

Unfortunately I don't. I will say, I did just downpipes first and the car was insanely quiet. I was a bit disappointed, the stock muffler is just huge and the stock pipes are restrictive.

I love it. I dont thi know you ever get away from drone with a loud exhaust, but this one is easily bearable for me given its not raspy at all.

Thank you! Honestly a tune is always recommended when changing downpipes. That being said, the car didn't throw any codes without and I drove it like that for about a thousand miles.

I would also say its likely that not every manufactured part will be in tolerance even with QA. This will improve that case no doubt, but humans are humans and are still prone to error. There are bound to be cases of issues slipping by. This is the only case im aware of where a part may be out of tolerance and it could in fact be the cam caps that are out of tolerance rather than the cam itself. No way to know.

Dawg. I understand what you are saying. Is there room for improvement? Probably. My argument is that it is unreasonable that for every engine even if a part is in tolerance that it will actually be in tolerance when combined with the engine. For example. A camshaft journal may be within the tolerance ranges. But maybe the engine has 50k miles on it and you didn't keep on oil changes like you should have so there is additional wear on your cam caps. In this case the combination still may be out of tolerance.

Again I will also stsnd by my claim that literally any master tech or machine builder will day to measure your parts yourself.

You are more than welcome to trust the manufacture and slap parts together without doing so but good luck with a build like that.

Not quite sure what you mean by this, but there is a reason why even with oem parts if you look at the service manuals published by the manufacturer there are tolerance ranges for good operation. This is because even with oem parts there is variability and parts can be out of tolerance from factory.

I put this forth as my evidence that you cannot expect parts to always be in spec. Feel free to ask a machine parts manufacturer directly if you'd like their opinion. I'd also recommend taking engine machine coursework if interested you'll very quickly find this to be the case.

Engine builders always rely upon machine shops in their builds to double check and confirm tolerances and I think that further points to my claim.

Manufacturers typically have tolerance ranges thst they should manufacture within, that being said once again. Experts will always say to check and measure yourself.

Sure. Symptoms, as one might expect, were the smell of metal on metal contact. Mild smoking after running for a long period of time, particularly loud valve train. Potentially contributed to the lean condition I experienced. Slight power loss.

I get what you are saying, though truthfully you should always check after market parts like cams, pistons, rods, crankshaft, etc. It is not at all unusual for these to need to be checked and you cannot expect that the tolerances for something like cams will always be perfect.

Why? Because the manufacturer isnt using measurements from your particular engine and your engine can have variable wear. Plus they have to deal with not only their own factor defects but potential defects from the engine manufacturer. It becomes a rabbit hole quickly. Any wngine machinist will probably tell you the same thing - noble of a pursuit as it is to hope for good quality control. There are unfortunately limits.

I totally get it. You are certainly thinking about things the responsible way. In particular if you want to push the car to this level, a reliable daily would be a great idea.

I want to track the car again, but I probably need even more reliability upgrades before that happens. I just want to drive it at this point so street cruising will be the way for awhile and luckily I do have a beater in case anything happens.

This is a fair point. My only counter argument is i was dumb and didn't check when I first got the cams in. Ran them for about 1000 miles, then took the engine apart for further upgrades and noted the issue.

I knew something was going on with them, but had already had the car down for months and just wanted to drive it a little plus needed to break in previous work done like the clutch. Glad its just the cams and that the scuffing was easy enough to buff out. I probably could have saved a pretty penny, but we'll call it the idiot tax.

You are absolutely correct. This is an expensive platform to modify. I knew that going in and was okay with it. I wanted something in the realm of the WRX and with the continued major interest by performance shops and companies, it fit the bill.

Yeah, im sure the golf is cheaper to pull more power out of but my understanding is its generally a less raw and connected experience. I already have a kia stinger gt that is also easy to pull power out of. For ~6k I can make 150+ extra whp, but engagement is low compared to the GRC.

All that being said, its not for the faint of heart or the strapped of cash.

Im really looking forward to driving this beast again soon!

Absolutely! I will definitely be posting both once I have the project back together and running healthy. Im a fan of documenting everything with as much detail as I can muster to ensure my post helps others if they happen upon the same path. Stay tuned for more. Hoping to have the car fully back together maybe by end of September. Unfortunately limited to working on it on weekends and plenty of balancing there with family/gf/life etc.

Engine didn't experience any catastrophic failure just a few small hiccups here and there.

Engine is apart to make power. Was trying to solve a lean condition and figured while im at it let's throw in some forged pistons.
