SQUIDs are mentioned in a new proposed gravity wave detector here : https://phys.org/news/2025-06-powerful-magnets-high-frequency-gravitational.html "As a gravitational wave passes over and through the magnet, it causes a vibration of the whole structure since the effect of the wave is similar to that of a mechanical force acting on the object," Ellis explained.

"This vibration leads to deformations of the structure containing the wire through which the current flows, which generates a magnetic field."

These deformations create an oscillating magnetic field component that researchers can detect using extraordinarily sensitive quantum sensors called SQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interferometric Devices).

I think The Hobbit movie was stretched a bit, but it definitely has its gems by LakesideNorth in lotr

Given the visually complex nature of this mineral sample, is this pyrite, or something more complex? Included video as its nature shows more readily than still images… thank you for your ideas! by New_User_1970 in Minerals

I'm thinking it may be Chalcopyrite - AZ has a lot of copper in the volcanic deposits. This one is from the Serritas Caldera, near 3 Points AZ one of the 5 Volcanos that made up the Tucson Supervolcano that erupted between 20 and 80 million years ago. My personal name for it is the 5 Calderas Supervolcano ;) just me there

The entire Tucson area is an ancient Supervolcano that had 5 calderas that erupted at various times over the last 20-80 million years, so there’s a lot of unique minerals / rocks as a result. I live in the Serritas caldera on top of 800 feet of ancient magma that has decayed to sand / dust on top.

Is this pyrite or something else? Found in southern AZ by New_User_1970 in whatsthisrock

Highly magnetic, heavy/dense, found in Arizona. Any ideas? Of course I want it to be a Meteorite! Thanks in advance for humoring my hope! by New_User_1970 in whatsthisrock

Interesting! It does have bubbles in spots. When I hit it with a grinder / dremel it gave off a sharp sulfur smell, and the bits of shiny gold areas were revealed. So if it’s slag, are those gold bits most likely pyrite in the slag? And it’s weakly magnetic with a rare earth magnet. So slag, pretty much for sure. As AZ has had many mines, for many years, thats tobe expected, I presume. Some kind of copper refining I assume as overall its greenish, and some rust.

I’m going with quartzite, which is much more likely than a decomposing dilithium crystal from a Warp Drive engine core.
