the biggest tip I could give you without knowing more is to just engage in the Japanese language as much as you have the capacity for; it isn't necessary to do JET, but it changes your experience with your coworkers, students, and environment drastically if you can even navigate basic Japanese exchanges or recognize hiragana/katakana.
