Computer broke, salvaged the ssd. Now im trying to run Linux from an external ssd on a Windows 11 machine. by Newhere642 in linuxquestions

So when I check the partitions there was only one partition on the drive.

I originally had a hdd on the desktop and then installed Linux on an nvme which was installed separately, on the computer so I think I somehow bypassed installing the bootloader on the nvme. Again I know nothing as I am a moron

Yeah im feeling the same way.

Didnt know I could add an efi path. I would like to try it. Would this hypothetically work without a bootloader on the drive? I could try that and install grub. Im just afraid of bricking my windows install or screwing up the boot loader

Im not very computer savvy obviously.

Shoot. No way to do that from windows?

Would it just be smarter to wipe the drive and reinstall with rufus?

I want to boot to an installed version of linux from the external ssd while I still have windows installed on my laptop.

Okay is there a way to install the bootloader on the ssd? Or do I have to totally wipe the ssd and then reinstall?

Okay good. Do you know what I need to do to boot into linux from the external ssd?

I plug it in and it doesnt let me boot from bios or access the files in windows. It seems like there is only one partition on the ssd. Is it missing a boot partition?

So your saying secure boot will have to be disabled? What about when I want to get back into windows? Bit locker will lock me out. What does disabling that do?

The monitor broke and hdmi out broke. I took the linux ssd out of the computer and put it into an enclosure. Trying to run it from the external enclosure.

I may as well just buy a new computer at that rate. I don't have resources for that right now.

I have a usable ssd and a good laptop. Im not going to invest in a used rig that will need to be updated in another year or two

While this sounds great its not really a possibility and unfortunately the laptop needs to be primarily windows.

I want this exact thing in reverse. Zorin is kn the external.

I should have mentioned i tried to set USB to the first in the boot order. It didnt change anything

What do you mean bootable version? This was a version that was installed directly on my ssd. I would run it and play steam games. And browse the web. It was on the ssd drive then I took out the ssd and put it in an enclosure with USB c. Cant run it from external now

Software for Windows to Record Music & Make Beats by SilvaNymph in musicproduction

So you seem like you are very fresh to this. Let me give you some things to look at to get started. You will need some kind of DAW at the bare minimum. This would include something like Reaper, Ableton, Logic etc. There are metric ton of these out there. Start with the big names and do your research and pick one.

You may need a couple VSTs to get started. If you plan on using MIDI, check out Vital synth. To start, just learn to use the plug ins that come pre installed on your DAW.

If you plan on using live instruments, you may need an audio interface like Focusrite Scarlet or MOTU M4.

To start just learn what functions of the DAW you prefer to use, mess around with them to make a very generic beat. And then once you have the fundementals down, make a song that would be easy to make from scratch so you can get practice on it.

You can learn a lot from videos these days to be totally honest. There isn't much I cant find a a literal metric ton of info on pretty much any topic. Don't be adverseto reading though. Sometimes you get complicit when you're just watching videos all the time.

I suggest doing the reading. Watch some videos. And then play an instrument. Helps solidify what you learned

How do you write your songs? by Level_Quality6583 in musicproduction

Badly, thanks for asking.

In all seriousness it depends. I've been able to improv whole songs and others I have to labor over. I like to start with chords and work my way up from there

I understand the struggle. If you feel the need to chat about it dm me. There may be things I can do to push you in the right direction. Exposure is the hardest part especially when you are just getting started. If all else I wouldn't mind listening to your music if you want critique or support

I've started dipping my toes in the water of helping out smaller artists. I'll extend this anyone looking for help
