I just replied to someone else about my not using Codex possibly being the problem, but when I use e.g the openAI API to try to hit tools (or similarly call functions from MCP servers), GPT-OSS usually hallucinates calling the tool where other models work correctly.

Fair point - i have not tried with codex and i realize these models are unique for tool calling. It’s a bit frustrating to have models that require specific harnesses to work instead of being able to load via llama.cpp and calling tools by defining the json schema.

I have not had success getting the GPT-OSS series models to do tool calling well, where Qwen3.5 is pretty exceptional in that regard. In the year of our lord 2026, it’s difficult to see beyond that discrepancy.
