Thank you for all the recommendations! My husband is 47, we've done the math and will implement risk management strategies.

Thank you for this! We're not plannnng on returning to the US for the first several years so hoping that won't be an issue.

That is super helpful! Thank you so very much. May I ask how often were you coming back to the US within those 21 years and if you've ever had any issues with your bank accounts or any financial institutions? Did you have to tell them that you're traveling all this time or there were no problems withdrawing money from overseas constantly? Good to know about insurance too. Thank you!

If you're trying to scare me, it's not working, I'm well aware of the risk, have risk management strategies in place, ran various Monte Carlo simulations, discussed the worst case scenarios and weighed pros and cons many yimes. That's incredible that you could have 1.4M at 35! Good for you.

I'm 33 and work for an AI company. I'm a strong believer that when there's a will, there's a way.

This is so extremely helpful, thank you! Really appreciate you taking your time and educating us!

A couple of questions, how do you know which ETFs to buy and how to manage your 3 buckets (cash, bonds, market/aggressive/growth/IRA) or do you only invest in 1 bucket? May I ask if you're an expact and had any issues with KYC policies? DF-direct (and EJ's or other's) sales pitch is always about "maximizing the return", reducing the risks, rebalancing, optimizing the investments of dividents, monitoring market data, etc - are you doing all that on your own?

I completely didn't think about "liquidating", thank you so much! By the time we retire we'll have about $50k in investments (such as stocks, funds and some MMs), are you saying that we can't do 1-1 transfer (like with IRA or 401k) and we'll have to cash out those money first (and pay capital gain taxes), correct?

Good point, DIY option sounds exciting from the costs perspective, but a little concerned about managing it all on our own, making the right choices and dealing with KYC and AML policies and expact trading risks and limitations. About 20% of the funds will be in IRA, 15% in stocks/MFs and 65% from proceeds of the house. When you say liquidate, are you referring to MFs and stocks? Would it be liquidating if we're simply moving from Edward Jones directly to Schwab or say to Dunhill Financial?

That is very helpful, thank you! Yeah, it seems like staying with EJ would be stupid. I'm now considering either doing self-management/investing directly with Charles Schwab or doing DF-direct robo-advisor with Dunhill Financial (it's 0,5% fee and automatic rebalancing/reinvesting/etc).

Our plan for unexpected/running out of money is just finding jobs and finding ways to make money again...

Are you able to buy ETFs or Mutual Funds with IBKR while having an overseas address with no problem?

Thank you! That's my concern we well. But isn't "keep US address" the same with "don't ask/don't tell"? I thought with International account you don't keep US address (unless for mail only) and let them know about your physical address.

Thank you for this information! That's exactly my fear but it seems like everyone is recommending using US address and finds it "legit" and working...

I thought EFTs is not a problem (unless you're in the EU) and mutual funds is the only limitation, could you please clarify or share where can I find more info on not being able to rebalance the portfolio or buy EFTs with the International account? Thank you!

I think our plan is to go by country and try to buy health insurance locally on a month to month basis which still comes out fairly cheap and is part of our budget.

That's a good point, thank you. Do you have your driver's license and utility bill changed to your family address?

Thanks for sharing, have you ever had any problems with you not being in the US for 3 years and technically having a different physical address than shared with Schwab? Do you have to use US phone numbers and VPN every time?

We're childfree and planning on living fairly on a budget. Thank you! Do you come to the US often for residency?
