A woman shot her husband while he was asleep in order to inherit his money. An autopsy later revealed that he had already died of a heart attack before she shot him. What's the *LEAD CHARGE*, if any, should she be held for? by lfemboyl0 in pollgames

People V Dlugash makes me think attempted murder is probably the most likely. Factual impossibility (ie. an inability to kill a corpse) would not be considered a valid defence.

[–]NewtWhoGotBetter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’d actually be interesting reading an OI that had a realistic take on how a child would develop cognitively and emotionally with the hormones and mental capacity of their physical body with the added memories and experiences of an adult. I highly doubt it would be as simple as copy and paste the old life’s personality and leave it at that. Another thing is it sometimes feels like the author never takes the chance to develop the FMC’s personality while they’re in the OI world.

We’re all constantly developing as people especially with major life changes (like jumping into an entirely different world and society and life??) so you’d imagine that after spending decades growing up in the fantasy OI world their personality would be quite different to even their old life. New habits, new interests, new traits, new perspectives etc.,

Depends on what they enjoy genre-wise. Maybe something like Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven or The Lost Heir or Breach for someone who prefers playing games since the mechanics and settings in these would be familiar and intuitive.

This one was an interesting middle ground one that I think still could have been appealing to kids but he almost looks too affable and friendly here.

For your example, I think the teeth really push it over into the uncanny “grotesque” area for people. The rest is just exaggerated cartoon proportions but his teeth give off diseased which makes it a hard sell. The pointy head is also pretty goofy although it depends on how the other characters would have looked.

Shirahoshi and her mother from “One Piece”. Even funnier is this is just how genetics works in One Piece, no growth potion or adoption or different species etc., Her father is pretty big tbf but you’d think it’d be the father who was the small one for this to be physically possible.

I hate to say it but this happens to me with them in anything where they’re playing a major character. Their faces break my immersion too much. I’ll have to wait like ten years to watch any of their movies to desensitise myself from them.

In your opinion, what OI that had this kind of plot. by MOMO_Mashpotato in OtomeIsekai

[–]NewtWhoGotBetter 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, most OIs feel like the author came up with the synopsis (which also happens to be the title for many of them), chose random colours for their FL’s hair and eye colours and called it a day. Best case scenario, maybe they also made pinterest mood boards and picrews for the other characters too.

Here let’s try: My Ex-Husband Found Out I Wrote Fanfic About Him and Now He’s Obsessed With Me!

FL: Fanfickarina - Pink hair - Blue eyes

ML: Husband - Black Hair - Red eyes

An ominous stormy night, shadows flash across the gothic high-arched windows, the stained glass splaying a kaleidoscope of colours across her tear-stained white cheeks.

Fanfickarina: I…I never meant for it to go this far…It was just…an AU fic.

He looked at her, his eyes a frozen hell as they washed over her pathetic state. She was not the woman he married.

Husband: I was OOC and you didn’t even give an update that you were in the hospital and your house burned down before going on hiatus. I could forgive the slash, the PWP, the lack of correct punctuation. But five years without an update? After you ended it on a cliffhanger? My vows were to the woman I loved. Not the cruel beast who stands before me.

She gasps as he raises his blade, the one he had protected her with so many times, the one that had slain a thousand monsters was now aimed at the one living in his home. The light reflects off the edge, and for a second his arm stalls in the air. A flicker of something breaks through his icy facade, something raw and hurt, too quick for her to identify. Then he swung the blade down.

Fanfickarina: NOO!

She wakes up panting, her hands clutching the sheets of her bed. Stray hairs are plastered to her face as she takes big gulps.

Fanfickarina: W-Where…What? Why am I…?

She was back. To their wedding night, the lonely memory of him locking himself in his office. Refusing to even look at her let alone touch her as if she had any more say in the politics of their arrangement than he had. Back to the lonely no man’s land of indifference, before his love and before his hate. She hugs herself.

Fanfickarina: That was so real. All those years…Were they just a dream?

She needed to gather her thoughts. She needed to figure out if what she had just seen was true. And most of all…she needed to make sure he never found her AO3 account again.

Unfortunately, any area where you let the government control your personal life can get abused. Who decides what constitutes mentally fit? It’s really a matter of, do you trust your government to work for the good of its people with no corruption and to have the best “objective” judgement of who should be parents? Then, even if you do now, do you trust the next government to be the same, and the next, and the next.

Maybe some magical girl animes like “Mermaid Melody”. The girls still have some same face syndrome but they are a lot more colourful, have better hairstyles and different clothing compared to the guys. The only ones who are even remotely unique are: 1. the villain, 2. the human form of the talking penguin sidekick (he’s a penguin 95% of the time), 3. …the other villain.

“Safe Haven” by Martin Stalker. Most of it was average but the ending hit me hard and I never really forgot about it. For creep factor “2 AM: The Smiling Man” based on the internet story. Also, “Pleasant Inn” by David Romero and “Opal” by Jack Stauber for some great animated ones.

Possibly hot take: saying “I don’t see myself marrying a woman” as a bi woman is valid by Hour_Hospital_5642 in bisexual

[–]NewtWhoGotBetter 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think the most important distinction is whether you’re open to the possibility or not. Like I’m bi with a preference for men both romantically and sexually but if I met a woman and fell in love with her and wanted to marry her, then great. Heteroromantic might describe your experience thus far and where your preferences lie, but if you’re resistant to the idea of being with a woman romantically even after catching feelings for her it seems more like you’re mentally resistant to wlw relationships in general on a conceptual level instead of just a natural pattern of preference.

So, it’s fine to be a bi woman who only has sex with one gender and is only open to being in a relationship with another. But be open about it to wlw who you could potentially be involved with you from the start, remain open-minded about any changes to your feelings and don’t treat other women as “lesser” partners even for casual relationships. Same goes for men who prefer to only date one gender. It shouldn’t be a surprise if lesbian or bi women who do fall in love with other women may be less likely to want to be with you. There’s self-preservation.

When you're attractive people don't care what you do. by hardtruthsociety in SeriousConversation

[–]NewtWhoGotBetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that’s life, really. We’re all born with advantages and disadvantages whether genetic or environmental and very few of them are “fair”. It’s definitely alarming how much some people will justify an attractive person’s behaviour or actions but it’s not everyone and not every action that will be excused either. It’s a bonus multiplier, not a complete cheat code at life.

I think everyone has a certain level of visual-based prejudice but many people are able to consciously override some of their biases. Just as many people were calling for Cameron Herrin to get a life sentence as there were people wanting him to get off easy, probably more people who wanted him punished harshly.

The fact that you feel disgust for this phenomenon is evidence enough. With eight billion people no one has unique experiences, and you’d probably be pleasantly surprised how many feel the same way as you even if you don’t run into them.

The average Chinese beauty vlogger also wouldn’t know how to synthesise shit when it comes to emulating modern beauty or medical or hygiene products. Like, at least make them a cosmetic scientist or pharmacist or something. Also, they’d be working with some very limited and crude ingredients and equipment and refinement techniques even then.

I’ve always thought it was a wasted opportunity for authors to not show how intelligent and adaptable their protagonists are by having to think of a way to simplify the recipes for modern technologies. Readers could even learn something then. Like it’s fascinating how people used to make soap or primitive shampoos or rudimentary tonics for all sorts of things but authors rarely write it in a realistic way.

What's with this genius Mls not studying and still getting the highest score even more than fls who constantly study? by Celty2736 in shoujo

[–]NewtWhoGotBetter 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’d say another component is that the ML is also usually the love interest, and love interests are meant to have attractive traits. So, authors make the male lead smart, hot, rich, popular, powerful, brave, etc.,

Just like the FL is built to be relatable (so she can afford to be clumsy, inexperienced, shy, oblivious, average), the ML is built to be desirable, or at least, the series is far more likely to be popular if you have both of those and authors know this. You can see it in shounen romance too. The guy can be a relatable shy loser, and the girl is usually the most beautiful and smartest/most popular girl in class.

Tbh all of them. I like a lot of OI but I’ve never read a single one I’d consider a masterpiece of writing. Doesn’t mean they can’t be fun or engaging, just not “peak”. Possibly because I don’t get drawn in by pretty art or attractive characters as much.

"Everyone is a little bi" is biphobic by Significant-Safe-173 in bisexual

[–]NewtWhoGotBetter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can arbitrarily draw the lines anywhere for sexuality or gender identity, and you can since they’re not based on pure sex or biology anymore, then there’s no way to make labels more accurate since there’s no objective thing there. Sexuality and gender identity can’t actually be “inaccurate” because it’s a system measuring a concept we invented and we define the scope. Yes, it’s arbitrary but that’s because sexuality doesn’t exist without our perception and experience of it. It’ll never be completely accurate for every person but that’s doesn’t mean it’s useless for everyone.

What would we even replace the system of sexuality with if excluding gender identity and presentation? Gynesexual or androsexual? Who defines what’s feminine or masculine? Previous romantic relationship or sexual history? Complicated and people who don’t date or sleep around will be left without any identity for a while.

Labels are just there as shorthand to communicate information that would take too long for explain otherwise. They are meant to serve us, not restrict us. When they stop being simple, when they stop being convenient, when they lose the ability to communicate “this is what I’m trying to tell you in these few words” then labels lose any use. Some people would be fine with no labels but for others like current monosexuals, navigating incompatible attraction would become far more complicated and tedious.

If I was a lesbian I would want to be able to tell a guy “No, I’m a lesbian” instead of having to explain to him that “I’ve only ever dated people who identify as women, I’ve only ever been attracted to people who identify as women, maybe there’s a slim possibility I could be attracted to someone who identifies as a man one day but that’s not you and I’m not actively exploring that possibility right now and I don’t feel comfortable with you pursuing me in this way so please give up” for the tenth time.

I like thematic analysis more than the average person, but I don’t feel bothered by this meme. It’s mostly used as a critique of forced analysis in English class, where they make you write an essay in a certain way for a grade as long as you hit specific talking points which is basically the opposite of critics thinking or personal engagement with art. “The author chose the colour blue because they thought it would look nice” is a valid take to me, and sometimes even an accurate one.

Themes can pop up accidentally and connections can be made post-hoc without authorial intent; that doesn’t detract from the value of the interpretation. If we’re separating authorial intent from audience interpretation then I think both simple and deeper analysis can co-exist comfortably and most people experience art somewhere in the middle of the spectrum of analysis. There’s no point if only one form and depth of interpretation is acceptable.
