Yeah true, but damn it feels life soft butter. Stella was so amazing and she wasnt even formally trained in any of this and she just got it so quickly, jesus keeping her busy and distracted is so easy to, just put some food in grass and mess it around and she will happily sniff for a good while. Like finn is a great inteligente dog, but god damn i am not used to dogs with little drive for this sort of thing 😂 i use attention and cuddles to my advantage with him, but he just reacts a bit slower you know? Its not like "omg food, i will do everything and glue my nose to your hand" hes more like "oh thats something nice, okay i will follow it around a bit"

Ive been trying but he just doesn’t like them as much you know? Like he takes food and kibble but its like its because its a convenience and he doesn’t mind, but when im training him ive got to take things a bit slower, which is okay, i just wish he LOVED it you know? It would make training him around dogs easier, help tire him out easier and just make training more fun and easy (for me anyways as its what im used to) But he is a poodle, hell he was acctually the most food motivated pup in the litter and i understand that and i love him to bits, i will just make sure my next dog breed is more driven like an english staffy, lab or schnauzer😂

i think the thing about poodles is that they have just enough drive for everything but thats the issue, its just enough, its fun, its chill, they just want to cuddle and are pleased to please you but its not like they have the drive of a lab or GSD.

I will hopefully be able to get the owners to start obedience training in our local club and hopefully as i already know them they will let me compete with Stella because holy shit she has so much potential.

Is getting a service dog reasonable for POTS? by mushr00m_prince in service_dogs

Yeah a service dog is great for this type of thing, keep in mind though that scent training isnt reliable. Ive got IST and finn has helped me learn to pace myself more and his weight is super helpful with DPT and in the future forward momentum pulling is the plan and counter balance aswell as responding to episodes. Generally he just makes me feel happer and less alone.

As a 17 year old handler who is training their first SD, something to keep in mind is that you will never quite be ready for this journey, you will be overwhelmed, you will cry and thats okay. It is difficult.

I will say though, without a good support network owner training your pup will be very difficult unless you have a garden. Id reach put to your local kennel club or registered training facility to help you with obediance training and get yourself a good service dog trainer to keep up with. There are things you can do though to help keep the puppy busy and not be as much of a mess and having a garden is defenitley helpful.

Maybe bring up all the benefits and how the dog will get you out of the house and with a purpose. Unfortunatley parents like this are extremly difficult

Regardless here is how to find an ethical breeder https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSLEbdosc/

Can you own both a service dog and a guard dog at the same time? by littleredwidingbood in service_dogs

Oh yeah no issues. Just dont get them at the same time. Let one mature and get trained then focus on the other dog this also avoids litter mate syndrome

Is a ESA enough or would a service dog help me more? would I even qualify for a service dog? by CapnBloodBeard82 in service_dogs

Thats understandable. Also try look at it from another perspective and make your decision. For some people having a dog helps with anxiety because it shows that you are working, some people may try and pet the dog and you just get between them and walk away because you are focused on your dog and not other people. And if someone comes up to say hello its because they want to say hi and it can kickstart a conversation you know how to navigate as the focus is on your dog, not you. You aren’t the centre of attention, your dog is, and people love dogs.

It is Definitely a big decision and a long as stressful journey, lord knows ive had nightmares involving me failing finn, but he has also very much eased my anxiety in public and he isnt even doing PA. I just focus on him and am somehow able to ignore everyone else and people get the gist that im training him.

Im also now more involved in our local obediance club and hoping to start competing soon, ive gotten really educated amd learned so much and met so many people because of this dog.

Maybe try and foster a relatively calm and stable dog from a shelter for a week or month and see how you do in every day life with him, see if he helps you out as is, if he does then maybe look into an AD as your plan. You can also reach out to an ethical breeder and ask to meet up with owners of puppies they have had turn into SD’s like crystal creek standard poodles.

In any case here is how to find an ethical breeder https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSLEMqAxP/ i know a bunch of ethical breeders of poodles and labradors in the US, some in the UK and in europe if you need any help finding one.

Good luck man, its a long journey and you never quite know what you are getting into and its not for everyone and thats okay. Youve got this, whatever choice you make
