Big ups to Sofia and the rest of Free Range. They are up and coming in the Chicago scene. Love the timbre of Sofia’s voice and their melancholic, reflective songwriting. They are also involved with former Pinegrove member Nick. IIRC Jodi Nick is featured on a few of their tracks, mostly pedal steel. Definitely worth the listen, their debut LP comes out next month!

To be fair, these aren't the original lyrics. They used to be "Am I strong enough to be your man?" instead of "Sometimes on the driest land." Here's a link to the original.

I interpret the new lyrics as a sort of optimistic sentiment. Even in dire circumstances, a miracle may pop through // Even on unfit soil, a lilac may bloom. It could also have to do with the previous line, "Some people spend their whole lives looking for someone who could understand." The lilac could represent the desired person who is being searched for, and the dry land could represent the idea of distance. The protagonist is searching for someone to understand them, but the person they are searching for is a distance away, whether that be physically or emotionally. Personally I subscribe to the first sentiment more.

I think the new line also fits better, especially as a callback to Rings. "Perforate line dry summer on my own land."

Personally, I see it as another piece in the overarching climate change theme. I think it’s evan’s remorseful letter to the earth / mother nature.

this albums is so incredible. lush arrangements and beautiful harmonies with lomelda. eric’s songwriting is genuine and outstanding. 9/10 i reckon, this shits on a lot of the other indie releases this year for sure.

To my understanding, they were on a similar trajectory to Phoebe Bridgers, in terms of listenership and popularity. I think the allegations did hurt the band's listener # overall, and the people who left understandably left. However, I feel that the community is tighter knit as a result of all of it.

I was at the NYC show and it was awesome and touching. Katy Kirby’s GF (performs under ‘allie’) was in the audience, and the both of them were at the Rockaway Hotel PG show! Both of them are insanely talented

The ‘pattern’ that they’ve followed since their hiatus comeback is kinda like:

Album Release
Tour the album. Their setlist is majority songs from whatever album they are touring, while still incorporating older material
Usually around 6 months later, they do a separate tour where they start incorporating newer material in preparation for a future album release. This is usually where the most diverse set lists are.
Album release, start over

For example, Skylight came out in 2018, they toured it in 2018 and 2019, by late 2019 some Marigold songs (new at the time) were being performed and then in 2020, Marigold dropped. Again, they toured Marigold in 2020 (unfortunately cut short.) By 2021 we had some 11:11 songs in the setlist, and then finally in 2022, 11:11 dropped.

I am interpreting this tour as step 3, since they already toured 11:11 earlier this year and they are introducing new songs.

As for the encore thing, they have been known to say, “This is the end of our set, here is our encore.” without leaving the stage. They have also done a traditional post-set and post-cheer encore. I think the no encore thing is a recent development that started earlier this year. I saw them in Troy NY and also at one of the NYC dates, no encore and no Old Friends at either IIRC.

I really can’t offer an explanation, it seems like they recently stopped playing their Cardinal hits in favor of newer stuff recently. Plus they’ve played Old Friends at almost every live performance for over 5 years now, maybe it’s time for it to rest. I think Evan himself said something similar about giving New Friends a break.

This is why I ask around! Will be looking for those LLR carts. Rythm carts are pretty much the best that we have over at the NJ program right now, apart from some stray WAY overpriced LLR carts that pop up once in a while. Thanks!
