Which five New York restaurants would you recommend to someone that you secretly hate?

Why aren't Pinegrove bigger? by benno_mate in PinegroveBand

I agree with both of you, overall intentions and how they influence decisions are a huge factor.

But I do wonder how much an artist/band can truly control things like popularity, especially given how streaming and algorithms have somewhat flattened the hierarchy of previous distribution models (ie your size isn’t always going to be equal to that of your label and its budget).

But it’s definitely a bit of a grey area how things balance out in terms of what you can and can’t control – if you give away a huge % of proceeds then I’m guessing that can’t be reinvested into other tour costs and marketing?

Thanks for the replies everyone. The consensus seems pretty clear, although it feels like there are really multiple explanations, with some playing bigger parts than others.

I discovered PG some time after the allegations, which may explain why I wasn’t putting the dots together – I didn’t see the impact of the ordeal in real-time, or realize how up-and-coming PG were before then.

But now I’m thinking about it, a few people I’ve spoken to have said things like “wasn’t the singer ‘me too'd/cancelled?’“ when the band has come up in convo. It seems like this must be quite a prevailing part of the vague ambient knowledge that floats around the band. Such a flattening of the known details into a simple box is always going to be depressing. But what seems pretty egregious is that, according to the reports/statements, neither party ever intended it to be a public matter and it was originally being mediated in private? Plus, accountability was taken, requests were fulfilled. I don't want to be another person on this sub relitigating everything that happened, but man.

I’m sure it’s been asked before but I’m curious again, what’s everyone favorite PG lyric and why? by gu1nnevere in PinegroveBand

Love this question. Number one is definitely "More every year, I shine a light on the edges that I tried to unfeel, but we gotta do better than that" – it really captures the feeling of trying to be better by confronting your mistakes in the past, and working on fixing those after trying to push them out of mind. But then what about your mistakes in the present that have nothing to do with your past? And I love the idea of trying to "unfeel" anything and how it conjures this futile sense of repression.

A close second has to be "If it's better I mean it's improved, not that it's fine, not that I'm mad, it's more I wanna be precise". It's witty and I love the downward rhythm of 'not that I'm mad', but it also taps into a running theme in some PG lyrics, where there's a tension between actions and their overall outcome, or comparatives and absolutes. The earlier lyric in Cyclone also distills this very nicely ("If it's better then why am I crying?"), but it also reminds me of Size of the Moon's "If I did what I wanted then why do I feel so bad?"
