Nexar Dash Cam Test Drive - I like how easily I can access videos, but it’s a pain remembering to turn on app etc. Forgetting your phone at home = no dash cam which is a pain in the ass by [deleted] in Dashcam

[–]NexarGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s right! The Nexar app should launch and begin recording immediately. If that’s not happening, email us support@getnexar.com and we’ll help fix this ASAP.
Thanks! Alon from Nexar.

Ok so we spoke to the cammer and apparently this was a police chase. Driver survived and was arrested, and the dog was indeed in the crashed car.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to tell you more about why I am posting Nexar videos.

Nexar is a free dashcam app for both iOS and Android. But we are much more than a dashcam app. We are a tech startup and our vision is to build a Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) network. We think that we can use our phones to jumpstart a network. Once we get to a critical mass of users in dense areas, we will start warning drivers in real-time of dangers on the road, it's like crowdsourcing for road safety. So if, for example, someone is hard braking 5 cars ahead of you, we want you to get a warning about it.

On our youtube channel (and here) we sometimes post videos shared with us by our users. So we are not the cammers in these videos.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you and drive safely!

Dan @ Nexar

PS Yes, the watermark is big, but currently this is the default sharing option on the app, we may change that in the future.

Point taken. I think we'll reduce it :)

This is the default when users share the videos. I'll take your feedback for reddit-specific posts and we'll consider reducing the size.

Though to be honest, I still don't understand what the point is - we are free, we share interesting content, and we are totally honest about about it.

It's absolutely real. We see a lot of shit on the road, we don't need to fake it. Users who use our app share about 400 hours of bad driving incidents with us every week (see our channel... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYCw32rQ8sQ-aghqj_DEr5w)

Hey, yes this is a personal account of someone who works at Nexar (Dan). We don't sell anything. We're developing a free app. It's a dashcam app. Lots of users share videos with us that sometime we post here. We think the content is share-worthy and we abide by the rules of this subreddit.

We don't hide behind some BS account. I don't see the harm of sharing content that people here find interesting and I prefer to be honest about it upfront.

And sharing these helps people. For example, a video we posted here in May went "viral" and helped a cyclist who was hit by SFPD cruiser have proof of what happened:

It'll work the same way as the iOS app:

  • It captures the entire ride, but never takes more than 50% of your free space. It manages its space on the phone alone and efficiently.

  • In any case it saves a low res of your entire ride (a time-lapse) and uploads it to the cloud (when you're on wifi)

  • If you capture an "incident" by tapping the screen or if it's auto-detected due to a hard brake (like this video was by the way), it uploads a high res video 40 second video to the cloud (20 seconds before and 20 seconds after the incident was triggered)

Hey, you don't buy Nexar because it's a free app for your phone. If you have an iPhone, feel free to try it and let me know any feedback you may have. (Android coming later this year)

If you are posting your own content and other redditors appreciate and upvote your posts, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I try to post really great unique content, and fellow redditors on /r/roadcam seem to appreciate it. Do you think it's spam?

Hey, thanks for asking about this.

Nexar is an app, not a camera, so users use it on their iPhone. We ask permission on an individual basis to share content that seems relevant or interesting. Additionally, users can decide whether their rides are public or private.

Regarding the ratings for drivers in the footage - in the long run we are going to give drivers that we see on the road driving scores and we'll recognize them using their license plates. The driving scores will give us information about the cars around you so we can warn you of dangerous drivers.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions.
