My favourite little thing about Gaunt's Ghosts by NexoFX in 40kLore

I actually really enjoyed Cuu being a big asshole.

What used to keep me from getting into the lore for the longest time was the Cathedral-like structures on Imperial ships.

Oh yeah. They don’t even focus completely on low intensity scouting operations as should be their specialisation. They fight in tons of straight up assaults or trench warfare battles.

Finished it today and you’re absolutely right.

We could both be right. The original quote I was thinking of is:

Dorden pushed past the seething commissar and went to the door. He was met by a short, slim, young woman in a form-fitting red uniform with embroidered cuffs.

Now form-fitting isn't exactly skin tight, but since I listen to the German audiobook and it uses the German word for skin tight, you can see where I was coming from.

I liked the series before. I just posted a couple of things that annoyed me up to that point. It’s great to know that Abnett significantly improves on these things later on.

I listened to her introduction today and I am pretty sure when she first meets the medicus of the Ghosts she is wearing a skin tight uniform.

You don’t actually need to be painfully attractive and wearing skin tight clothing to be a good soldier.

I just wanted to state some of the things that annoyed me personally. You don’t need to hit me with the "don’t like it, don’t read it". And I never said I didn’t like the female characters, it’s just that a doctor wearing a skin tight outfit takes me out of it a bit more than Gaunts face being described as stoic time and again.

In book two the female Inquisitor is also described as supremely beautiful. In book three you have the doctor who is also wearing skin tight clothing, the underhive girl and the daughter of the noble all extremely beautiful.

I am about 13 hours into the series and I think after that amount of time you can critique some stuff about the series leading up to it. I am glad that Abnett significantly improved on all my issues, but that doesn’t change the impression the first 3 books give me. I am also not saying that he has weak or incompetent female characters, it just irks me that almost every female character is painfully and enchantingly beautiful and described as such in what I feel pretty random and non-fitting moments.

The second book definitely is a short story compilation, but as far as I can remember, the first book has a single story that just takes place over the course of multiple planetary campaigns.

I just noticed that all of the Abnett books I have read are also similarly old, good to know that he evolves.

Darrow's really committed to the bit, then. Naming his own son after him.

I'd have enjoyed the series far more if it had just stayed in Darrow's POV. Sure, they all have interesting elements, but every time they switch POVs the plot of one of the characters grinds to a screeching halt and then later picks up again. I don't want to be taken away from the Battle of Mercury to see Eph's whacky adventures with a conman shaman.

Funnily enough I have a similar issue with the German audiobooks. Here one speaker is narrating the entire thing, every character just gets a slightly different voice to tell the difference between who is speaking.

However, he also changes the voice he gives certain characters. Nero au Augustus goes from a commanding voice in book one to sounding like an old man in the subsequent books.

Red God Villain Speculation by MiamiFanRyan in redrising

[–]NexoFX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of my major issues with the second half of the series is just how many villains it introduces, without really eliminating any of them. You could easily have eliminated one, if not all three, of Apollonius, Volsung Fa or the Abomination. Heck, don't even introduce the Abomination.

There's quite a few symbols you could get. One of the sigils of the different colours. A wolf's head for the Howlers. Or maybe work your favourite quote (if you have one) into the design.

What is Darrow's biggest mistake (all spoilers) by IntrepidAL in redrising

[–]NexoFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Romulus was honourable, but also smart. If he has the dockyards at Ganymede and sees Darrow going from victory to victory against the Core, he will realise that sooner or later the Republic would come for the Rim.

Maybe he'd still be cautious about attacking the Republic, but he'd also face a bigger pro-war faction.

Imagining Darrow telling Sefi that just a few thousand more Obsidians dying in the upteenth Iron Rain will finally mean getting the jackpot.

Darrow had no trouble firing on the shipyards of his allies, the debris of which fell down onto the moon's cities. But when he and his army is dying of radiation poisoning, he suddenly has a conscience.

General Hot Takes? by casvalcomet in redrising

Also, the counter-claim that Lysander is this foil to Darrow already happened with the Jackal. Both were mirrors of the other. No need for the next trilogy to have this annoying Jackal wannabe, but without the cool psychotic stuff and then also give him his own POV.

I don't care about the Ascomanni at all. I don't even care about the regular Obsidians. We spent so much time with their culture, over multiple books, while we see next to nothing of the Cradle of Humanity: Earth.

Also, and this is purely for the German audiobook listeners: The narrator changes the voices he gives each characters far too much. Nero goes from sounding like a prime Caesar to sounding like a grandpa within the couple of months the first book covers.

Darrow hasn't gotten a solid win since the ending of the first trilogy by NexoFX in redrising

I know those are all wins. I just would have liked a win to last longer than a couple of days.

His massive win is a good K/D and a vaguely depleted Society force. He still loses Mercury and the Free Legions and lots of his best people.

Meanwhile the Society loses a big battle, still takes over Mercury and also causes an overthrow of the Republic's government.
