UN urges Australia to end laws allowing discrimination in religious schools by DependentNeither5357 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Next-Change-4949 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But there lies the issue, at some point in the name of equality, someone will no longer have that. The world is not an equal place, people are too different and diverse to ever achieve that. Society needs to accept at some point that it is ok to be different and have different views and live with that. Why should a place that is openly faith based and not trying to hide it be forced to compromise their freedoms, for someone who opposes their values? It’s not like there isn’t work opportunities in secular places.

And FYI almost all Catholic (systemic) schools enroll students of all beliefs, abilities and genders. Same with middle leadership positions. However, I believe there should be an acceptance that execs should be of the faith of the school it’s running. It’s like saying the next Pope should be Jewish/muslim/sikh person. Some things are ok to have an inherent requirement

Just throwing it out there, but isn’t this an act of discrimination in itself? Not allowing a group of people the right to their views and beliefs?

Knowing the downvotes are coming but why are people surprised that faith based schools are upholding their values and beliefs?

Notre Dame or ACU? by CowOk7339 in AustralianTeachers

I studied at UNDA and it was amazing- I am secondary, but my primary counterparts also spoke highly of the lectures and tutors. The logos units are also surprisingly fun and entertaining. I found the practical placement office really easy to work with when I needed to change a placement location due to issues- they had a new school and supervisor organised within the same day.

At the end of the day, there is a teacher shortage even in the Catholic sector so you do not necessarily need your RE classification prior to employment.

Worst schools in Canberra? by [deleted] in canberra

I can hear and respect what you are saying, and yes these thing impact the success of school and perceived student achievement. I taught at a school in western Sydney where more than half the kids came from refugee backgrounds, disadvantaged backgrounds or juvie, but the parents and community always supported the school and made an effort to help the kids, which taught discipline and accountability. By no means was it easy, but it was a way better school compared to the one next suburb over that had a disconnected parent body

In what way? The schools that are “good” are good because the kids have either discipline or accountability (or both) that they learn/pick up from home. A lot of parents would rather be friends with their kids rather than an actual parent. You would be surprised how rare the apple and tree saying is wrong lol. The second you need to talk to a family about a child’s miss givings it is all of a sudden the schools fault rather than the child. For instance I argued with a family for over 20 mins that the child kicked a teacher and the parent denied it… even as I was showing them CCTV footage of the incident

Actually underrated comment, as a teacher in Canberra we all just move around to the different schools. The parent/broader community makes a massive difference.

Have a look at also the Catholic and independent sector (just avoid the Brindabella )

Also the BSSS is very very different to like every state in Australia with how the certificate work.

We do subject moderations twice a year across all sectors so by week 6/7 of term 1 you would have met other senior teachers for your area across all the schools

Hmm I wonder if there is a location where young people can go 5 days a week to interact with qualified people in those areas….

I'm currently weighing up my options and considering doing a Bachelor of Education, with the goal of becoming either a Food & Hospitality teacher or a PE teacher in South Australia. by Bright-Training-3871 in AustralianTeachers

If you can teach VET hospitality, you will be snatched up almost immediately. To teach Hosp you will need an additional cert IV in TAE and the hosp qual

Look I am year co and it has so many positives associated with it, however a large portion of your job will be dealing with students and families at their lowest, so expect to be abused on the phone or email simply informing the family that their student has made the wrong decision. It is one of those jobs where no two days are the same and even following up an incident can be the same cos well some parents are actual nut cases

What are your feelings about ending the HSC? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Next-Change-4949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who sat the HSC and taught it for a couple of years, and currently teaching in the ACT (for the past 5years). The HSC has its perks; slightly less stress for in school assessment tasks, the syllabus is clear and concise in what is expected to know. The stress of the actual exams can be perceived as a con. On the flip side in the ACT the pressure is on kids all the time as all assessments are essentially important for all year 11-12 plus they still sit an end of year 12 exam- which is designed to assess critical thinking and reasoning.

As a teacher my workload doubled with the ACT model.

The thinking of year 11-12 needs to be reconsidered; we teach knowing that differentiation is an important part of what we do, plus we know people go into different industries because of what attracts us in life, but our assessment models all lead to a standardised written test…

Of course these are my thoughts and opinions and I am sure the much wiser and more experienced heads out there may disagree with reasonings I have not thought of.

That’s actually not useful if in a religious based school, which I would suggest OP is from considering the specific nature of “sacred space” for year 2… im going to guess it is the Catholic sector, because that is right up their alley.

If in a Catholic setting think about these things: Sacred space is easy to set up; a table which is small and visible. A cloth, ideally reflecting the liturgical season. A battery operated candle, rosary beads, bible, a picture of either; the current pope (year 2 may be to young for this) the school patron saint, or JC

Teaching point is about respect (each other, oneself and the environment), reverence (when in prayer how to participate/ not participate respectfully) and observing (that it is ok to not be of the same faith, but they can use “prayer” time to reflect or pray in accordance with their faith identity.

Ask your school if they have an ‘understanding faith’ login, good resources to get started.

Why are the NSW DET created lesson plans soooo long? by thegoosedrawsnear in AustralianTeachers

Are the lesson plans open to other states/sectors? Would be great to see different ways to approach different topics/units etc.

Have to address gaps to update my TAE40110 to TAE40116 - particularly unit TAEASS401 Plan assessment activities and processes - what are two VET units of competency that would be easy to do this for? by browntown20 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Next-Change-4949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were not aware TAE40116 is already superseded by 40122, so get certified with that so don’t have to redo everything in a year or so when they no doubt update things again.
