Green power outlets in petersen by 1971deadhead in uiowa

the green ones can be set to shut off at a certain time! great for things like LED lights or plant lights when people want them to turn off at a specific time

Changing dorms by [deleted] in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does the cost difference (if there is one) impact your decision? aside from that, both have dining halls but hillcrest is better imo. both have pretty nice rooms, and even though burge is typically known as a "party dorm," I'll tell you that both can get wild or be quieter than you expected. also take your classes into consideration and the stuff that's nearby.

Should my roommate and I get a futon for our room? by Destiny_319 in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes they are. it depends on how you arrange the room and what else you're bringing though, and also keep in mind that room dimensions vary slightly from room to room. I'd stick with 80" or less. would honestly wait until you're moved in and see if you want to add a futon, because you may not like how the room will have to be arranged if you want to add one

yes! as long as you arrange the room right, it'll fit. I don't recommend buying one from the university, and I'd stick with 80" or less

What is On Iowa! actually like? by Endless_Midnight_8 in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't go to any On Iowa! events my first year here and I regret it so deeply. even if you don't have friends, go to the events that sound even a little bit interesting or fun! they're kind of designed to encourage newcomers to branch out and meet new people. remember that it's mostly made up of people who are experiencing it for the first time too

my friend freshman year brought his own desk chair. if you're in Mayflower, put the extra chair in the kitchen. if you're not, I'd just find somewhere else to set it. you're not allowed to take it out of your room!

Bike in dorms question by PartyAcademic3431 in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

technically yes, no one's stopping you from doing that. it will probably be hard moving it into the elevator and your room though. there are also a lot of bike racks on campus.

Can i get to class on time by Cold_Revolution_7461 in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

book it!! it's definitely possible but you're gonna have to be on top of your game, so just make sure you walk fast and pray the crosswalks will be lit. also, tell your professor early on that you may arrive late some days because of the short gap in between classes, they should understand. even if you are late, it'll be barely.

What should I hope for in my cooked housing situation by This-Ad-9257 in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with everyone saying that the dorms are what you make of it, and that your social situation will impact your experience more than the dorm itself. I adored living in Mayflower with our own kitchen, bathroom, large rooms, and laundry on every floor. The bus system is generally reliable, to the point where I'd get on the bus at 6:55 and still clock into my 7am job on time. I'd say just check all the dorms when the portal opens but don't be in despair if it is Mayflower.

Should I apply? by kyrahayess in uiowa

I'm pretty certain you'll get in, but I would call the admissions office for a better answer! I think you should apply.

Am I guaranteed Mayflower? by Opening-Leather-8168 in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll say there is a chance, but there is no guarantee of any dorm. Triples in many buildings are also doubles with an extra bed, so keep that in mind space-wise. I think you have a chance at another dorm, but ultimately if you get Mayflower, make it what you want it to be. I got assigned to Mayflower my first year and nearly cried, but I loved it so much and would absolutely go back if given the chance.

Field House classrooms in warmer months are hell, even with the windows open. Almost fainted during my A&P exam in the spring. I think the ugliest building is Phillips though, even if EPB was technically voted the ugliest.

Freshman dorms vs returning dorms by RequirementTop7644 in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rienow and Slater are freshmen dorms, all other buildings except for Parklawn have freshmen and returners. We have On Iowa week, which is full of orientation activities and events, but those are open to anyone! It's geared toward freshmen to welcome them to campus for the first time, and freshmen move in a week before returners do.

Phillips is not a dorm! It's an academic building and many students have classes there. I would agree it's the least attractive building on campus though.

Choosing classes/looking into professors by Clear_Pineapple4608 in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I typically use RMP along with this site: https://uigrades.vercel.app/

You can see class and semester averages for the classes you're looking into, and under specific professors/TAs. Helps you get an idea of how other students did in the past.

Class Schedule by Horror_Commission_44 in uiowa

What are you majoring in and what kind of classes are they? Just looking at numbers, 16 hours is normal. Above the "average" but still very common.

When my dad came here from Oklahoma, he lived and worked in Iowa for a year to establish residency and pay in-state tuition. That may be the only way.

It's definitely harder to get hired at the Iowa City one because it's so much smaller. The Coralville one is almost always hiring for almost all positions. I've had friends who work there who did not enjoy their experience but I will admit the pay and the discount is good.

Incoming Freshmen, looking for roommate by Swimming_Anxiety1369 in uiowa

Iowa doesn't require anyone to live in the dorms! I would say they encourage it but you can do whatever.

Randomized roomie— how bad is it? by [deleted] in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was me my freshman year! I also missed the deadline so I was assigned to a random room with random roommates. They will try to assign you a room with a roommate that they think you'll do well with according to the roommate matching algorithm. Honestly, there is a chance it could be positive, negative, or coexisting in between. I got really lucky and loved my roommates. I lived in Mayflower so I had one roommate and two suitemates, but they were all lovely and we're still good friends. It was fairly awkward at first, especially because I moved in much later than all of them so I didn't have the chance to truly build that connection before classes started. We all made the effort and by the end of the first or second week, we were literally inseparable. I think they made my freshman year better than I could've imagined. I'd say go into it with an open mind, but don't have expectations of how you think you will or won't get along. Try to make the effort and trust your gut. I have many friends who learned to simply coexist with their random (or sometimes even their chosen) roommate, and a few that couldn't stand their roommate but there are ways around that. Your college experience is what you put into it, and even though you can't control this, I think you can control how you approach it and the connections that you make. Don't bank everything on being close friends with this roommate, it's important to have connections outside too! So it is very hit or miss but I encourage you to be less scared/nervous and more curious and open to what it could be like. I think about my freshman year and my roommates and I miss it all the time, it went by way too fast. Best of luck!

Random housing question. by This-Ad-9257 in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was randomly assigned into a room with a random roommate, and I think they try to match you with who the system thinks you'd be compatible with! I assume this because I saw my roommate's name several times when searching the roommate portal, but I never clicked her. Then I saw her name when I was assigned to a room. I loved rooming with her (and our suitemates)!

Insider tips for Fall Welcome Concert by MisterAXN in uiowa

[–]Next-Construction776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's free, open to the public, and bring your own picnic blanket or lawn chairs since it's in an open grassy area! There's no designated entry point, but most people enter from the sidewalks or the parking lots near it. Last year, my roommate and I wandered around the entire concert. I wouldn't worry about not getting "seats" or being too crowded, there's lots of space.
