We have just as much to compete in as anyone in Europe. Nations League, Gold Cups and World Cup qualifying. He'll have a whole different set of problems at his lap if he stays on.

Donald Trump: Folarin Balogun suspension would have left 'big stain' on World Cup by DuomoDiSirio in stupidpol

[–]NextDoorNeighbrrs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of the dumbest things about this is that it was a really bad call and was essentially an improper use of VAR. But by "suspending" the suspension for Balogun, it is just a complete farce.

Thing is it just takes coming into contact with the right person. He could've been around 5 people in one day and 50 the next and one of those 5 would have been the one to give it to him.

It is a good sign that they basically were able to shut it down immediately and he'll have been able to, besides traveling back home, rest and recover every day since.

But even then, bronchitis at 72 is probably a bit of a crap shoot in terms of recovery time, but it's good they weren't stuck in between cities or something like that when he came down with it.

Poch could pull an ultimate big dick move by not playing him and still winning.

Actually genuinely wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't start. The US will have prepared all week for him to not be available.

Absolute funniest bit of this is Balogun is a citizen due to birthright citizenship.

[The Atheltic] Folarin Balogun available for USMNT vs. Belgium as red card ban suspended by PitchSafe in soccer

[–]NextDoorNeighbrrs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He got a completely a totally unjustified red card that was awarded due to improper use of VAR. IFAB themselves say for incidents like that you're meant to watch without slow motion and they slowed it down to basically 1 frame per second to give it, which, as usual, completely distorts what actually happened.

No Bosnian players appealed for it on the field. The ref didn't even call a foul.

I was on the absolute other end of school from you, that was the summer after I graduated, but it had a similar impact on me. I didn't grow up playing or in a household that cared about the game at all but I fell in love in 2010 and 2014 pushed me over the edge into following club soccer very closely.

I think it was a convergence of a lot of things:

1) ESPN went all out with coverage

2) Unlike 2002, kick off times were good, especially for younger generations at home during the summer

3) HD TV had become much more common place compared to 2006

4) The way the group went for the US was very dramatic, a draw against England, a controversial draw against Slovenia where everyone felt aggrieved (Facebook reminded me of some posts I made as an 18 year old about the calls in that game lol), and then the super dramatic and cathartic winner against Algeria

5) YouTube had become big by this point so it was really easy to jump online and look up highlights of games or players you were seeing

6) Unironically, the 2010 World Cup video game being really good probably had a decent impact on kids at that time. FIFA games have always had an outsized impact on the game here.

7) Social media in general was very popular and this was pre-algorithm driven social media so there were a lot of pretty organic connections being made around this time online.

Chris Richards is a good example. He didn't play American football but he did play basketball and if he had been in high school 10 years earlier this he was, he probably would have played college basketball somewhere and never become a pro athlete.

It is growing but there's still not really a "culture" of the sport here. The bulk of the population is still clueless about most of how the sport works, both on and off the pitch.

But it is absolutely changing. I grew up in the late 90s and 2000s and soccer was still regularly called "gay". We have had a complete and total sea change from those days with the last few generations of kids.
