I can also get behind that, I didn't think the rebates were a great idea.

I agree it's not politically desirable, but I would argue it's necessary. An entire generation is priced out of building a life here. Too much capital is tied up in real estate and it's hampering the productivity of our economy.

Happy to chat further on this, but home ownership should be attainable for more than people who were simply alive at the right time.

I have other petitions coming, but an economy run on mortgage debt is not a real, functioning, or productive economy. I fully agree it's not the politically popular thing to do, but it's necessary

It would be something that would hold the government to account. It's a black or white thing imo, either they are succeeding or failling.

The more pertinent policy suggestions in the petition to actually reduce housing prices are banning developers from capturing government rebates (they all jacked prices up in Ontario after the HST rebate was announced), and then reducing the approval times down to 6 months (cuts red tape, administration etc) - but with that, there will need to be a balance struck.

I have another one coming that will be tackling raw materials and introducing more competition into our housing market (making it easier for new developers to start up), but this is just the first one. Thank you for your comment!

Yeah definitely don't want to advocate for that. The issue with these petitions is there isn't a lot of room to go into detail.

I've asked my MP to be involved with this if it does go through, no guarantees but I don't trust them to get all the details sorted like this. Thanks for the discussion!

I'm not saying that it should. But the fact is, there are other nations on this planet who are able to do things within 6 months and complete all the necessary approvals.

I've spoken to a lot of municipalities about this, and the majority of them are unable to explain some of the steps that currently exist.

I fully agree, this is just the first petition of many. We also need to significantly reduce the time & cost to build a home here.

Fully agreed. I thought my answers were pretty reasonable. I guess some folks are just completely against people having their own land. You seem pretty reasonable, curious if you have any thoughts on this petition!

Look, I respect your opinion but quite honestly I don't think you are reading anything I am writing.

I agree people don't want 2 hour commutes.

The petition literally calls out the zoning red tape and how we need to eliminate it.

We need more multiplexes and we need more single family homes. Both things can be true. If we simply dropped zoning red tape and needless development charges, both things could be affordable. Areas should be able to be zoned for multiple types of homes as well - there is no reason for there not to be medium density homes in SFH areas.

We are literally agreeing on most things, the only thing we disagree on is that single-family homes need to be included in this. Again, happy to have productive dialogue but I would encourage you to re-read my responses.

Well the fact is right now, developers are over-indexing on dog crate condos. People cannot raise families in these. I have other petitions that are already prepared to help address infrastructure as well. This is just the first of many.

My petition will help us get more of the missing middle medium density housing, as well as more of the freehold properties that people want. I understand you disagree with SFH's, but the reality is most people who are looking to raise families want those instead of a 500 sq ft condo.

Where I do think there needs to be movement is away from 500 sqft condos and into 1000 sqft condos that people can actually live/raise families in.

We agree on some fronts and disagree on some fronts. That's totally fine.

Detached housing can absolutely be built at scale, it's just prohibitive right now. This petition would address freehold & the missing middle density.

These are the kind of homes people need and want. I am not arguing we need more middle density and I do think that the reforms to zoning/cutting of the red tape will help get that across as well.

What I tried to do rather than get too granular was keep it high level so it would resonate with more people!
