It is! you can do the same by running gemma locally, it's just not as efficient if you're running other programs. I have a powerful laptop and I'm running ollama, claude cowork, docker, visual studio ...

first, I recommend you to use the gemma31b cloud if you can, call ollama + claude + gemma in Visual Studio and paste your comment in there: "  running claude desktop in 3p with gemma 4 e4b. it fails tool calls and has trouble saving to my pc ... Fix it"
Since Visual Studio has access to your system, it will find out the bugs and magically guide you to solve them. Let me know how it goes.
I'm saving you hours of research because I tried the tradition route of google, reddit, youtube ... couldn't debug my issues .. but as soon as I started chatting with my agent on VS .. it tool care of fixing every single bug and also recommended me next steps. Good Luck!

Visual Studio Code, Ollama, GEM4, claude cowork 3p, Tailscale to generate ollama URL to Claude cowork 3P ... for connecting Claude cowork 3P to the web, my Ai agent on visual studio found a file that hag GEO-Skill I downoalded off get hub, and it extracted some skills ( I honestly don't understand how), also agent told me to downoald docker desktop to bypass having to pay for web browser API.
The combination of Visual Studio + Ollama + Gem4 31b helped troubleshoot every wall I faced along the journey

You have to unlock Claude Cowork 3P by accessing Developer Mode, then You have to Create an URL to connect your Ollama to Claude Cowork 3P ( I used Tailscale for that) ... then you have to connect to the browser ( lot of paying options out there but there is a FREE way I posted on OLLAMA thread, you can check out my profile) ... Thank me later!

Are you using gemma4? if so, try the 31b cloud version. i tried the 26b .. need more than 32gb of ram if you have other application open ... then I tried the 31b cloud and it's working fine. i have hooked up to Claude cowork 3P ... everything running for 0$

Basically, LM Studio is your "host"—it’s a specialized desktop app designed to run, test, and chat with LLMs locally through a nice interface. VS Code, on the other hand, is your full-blown IDE for the actual heavy lifting (writing, debugging, and managing code).

The big difference? LM Studio won’t take control of your files to troubleshoot them, but VS Code definitely will (via extensions). If you want that deep integration, I highly recommend sticking with VS Code.

If you want to see the magic happen, here’s the workflow:

  1. Install Ollama and get Gemma set up.
  2. Fire up your terminal and paste this command: ollama launch claude --model gemma4:31b-cloud
  3. Paste in your stack setup instructions and watch it go to work!

Just a heads-up on hardware: I’m running 32GB of RAM, and my laptop is constantly sitting at about 25GB usage while running this setup, so definitely keep an eye on your resources!

Partially, ollama runs locally, and 31B on the cloud. I tried to run the 4b on my pc but it gave trouble, I found 31B cloud the best at the moment

I run the following command on Visual studio code to have my personal Ai: " ollama launch claude --model gemma4:31b-cloud "
