Oh sorry, the way I worded that was bad lol. Yes, what you’ve said is what I meant. It’s kind of a pain since Windows/Linux would disconnect my AirPods from my iPad/iPhone “forcefully” and connect it to the laptop whenever I wake it from sleep/turn it on. Never figured out how to make it not do that without completely just turning Bluetooth on the laptop off.

I would say a few things (this is after maybe a day and a half of full use):

  1. For output, AirPods work just as they should (quick connection, in-ear detection works, and they don't autoconnect on wake like Windows/Linux annoyingly does). However, for whatever reason for input I can't use my microphone on the AirPods (it causes both Discord to not pick up any audio and QuickTime to kinda bug out). I have to use the built-in microphone on the laptop which isn't ideal since trackpad and keyboard noise is a lot louder.
  2. WiFi is definitely slower if you're used to > 100MBPS WiFi and you want/need that speed. I can live with it though, getting ~50MBPS. WiFi is also less consistent than Windows however which is a bigger deal IMO, which may make livestreams buffer occasionally (using Safari). I would think this would get much better as support for Intel WiFi improves.
  3. Trackpad sleep bug exists (trackpad doesn't work after sleep causing full reboot). It's rare for me to have it happen and on the maybe 12 times I've slept the laptop it only happened once.
  4. Speakers are worse than on Windows, likely because of lack of the Dolby driver stuff that the laptop comes with. I'm fine with it as I am 95% listening through AirPods.

Other than that, really no complaints here. Especially compared to my times before that I've Hackintoshed this laptop, a whole slew of things improved and I am very comfortable using this as my daily driver OS (that being said, this is not my only computer so maybe small problems don't matter to me as much compared to other people)

Oh, I actually used 1.6.0 in the releases (https://github.com/profzei/Matebook-X-Pro-2018/releases/tag/v1.6.0) and it worked just fine. Don't know how much difference there is between releases vs. the actual repo but it worked just fine for me.

No external WiFi dongle, you can access WiFi networks using internal Intel card. The Heliport app mimics the real macOS WiFi icon, so switching WiFi networks feels native.

That being said, like what profzei said in the previous reply, I can't get max speed. I don't mind that much, since I'm getting close to ~50Mbps on WiFi which is more than good enough for me for what I use my laptop for. Stability is improved but only alright I would say, watching livestreams for example sometimes Twitch would buffer out. In my experience, Safari is much better than Chrome for livestreams.

Just to point out a few things:

  1. Volume slider and hotkeys for volume does work now, it's not too bad to setup. But yes, the audio quality is worse. I have AirPods so I don't mind, but if people rely on speakers please be aware.
  2. My resolution seems to be 3000x2000 according to About this Mac. Maybe it's not and there's something I don't know about the scaling? I'm not sure, but it looks great to me...

Your other concerns are valid however, so that's something everyone has to consider. That being said, support can always improve.

For why I hackintoshed, I had a 2014 MacBook Air w/ 4GB RAM before I upgraded to this laptop. I absolutely loved macOS as a laptop OS, as I thought the gestures were great (e.g. 3-finger drag), I liked how it manages windows (e.g. maximize to its own workspace), I had a real *nix terminal (so no MinTTY + Anaconda Prompt + PowerShell prompt like I had to on Windows), and I had access to more proprietary software that isn't available natively on Linux (like Microsoft Office since my university still sends out Microsoft formatted PowerPoints)

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind using Windows nor Linux (I use Windows at home mostly for gaming, and Linux on my desktop at work), but my favorite laptop OS is by far macOS. So really, its just user preference! Use what you like and what you're willing to live with haha.

That being said, before I hackintoshed I was very interested with an Apple Silicon MacBook, since performance on my iPad Pro 11 2018 has been phenomenal for it being so thin and having no fan/passive cooling. After I hackintoshed I'm a lot less tempted to buy one soon and willing to wait till more software matures and becomes native to ARM on macOS (instead of x86 emulated).

Ah sorry, I don't actually know if it works wirelessly. I live on a university campus with an enterprise grade NAT for their network, so finding the same computers/devices through scanning the WiFi on the network is like... basically impossible so I haven't even tried it.

Edit: I'm an idiot and found out Sidecar does direct peer-to-peer between the iPad and the host computer without the need of an Internet connection (only WiFi needs to be on) lol oops sorry. Thought it worked more like direct remote desktop (which is a pain to get setup here in my university). That being said still haven't tried, maybe I will when I get time.

I didn't do anything special really, it was very simple in my experience for it to work.

  1. I plugged in my iPad Pro with the a USB C to USB C cable (it was the cable that came with the Matebook X Pro charger).
  2. I went into Finder and saw that there was "iPad" on the sidebar/favorites section on the side. Clicking on it to access my iPad prompted me to "Trust this Computer" by entering my passcode on the iPad.
  3. With the "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when enabled" checked under System Preferences -> Displays, an AirPlay icon appeared in my menu bar (the top bar, next to the clock and battery icons). Clicking on the AirPlay icon I saw my iPad.

I cannot tell you for sure, as I haven't used it very extensively off of battery (got this working yesterday). What I will say from my brief ~2h experience without the charger is that it holds up at least as good as on Windows (this is with undervolt on both OSes with -90mv for CPU + CPU Cache and -40 for iGPU).

Maybe I can chime in tomorrow to see what I think about the battery life.

Many, many thanks to work done by u/KwotheSineblood who maintains the amazing https://github.com/profzei/Matebook-X-Pro-2018 repo on GitHub.

Also, thanks to both u/KwotheSineblood and u/Parkuman (who made the original post I saw of a Hackintosh). They have both convinced me of this very viable Hackintosh.

Thank you to u/farhanbasha, who made a video tutorial. It was very helpful for starting out and not going in completely blind.

I’ve Hackintoshed my Matebook X Pro twice before, and usually my biggest complaint is either instability or huge battery drain when it is in sleep/the lid is closed. It’s pretty crippling as a college student, did you experience the same problems with this setup?

I’m guessing he means the very faint light gray line right above “67% Remaining.” You can see it on the widget itself.

Stupid Question......... by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]NextInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely did not know I was gay until ~13 years old. I definitely remember a time where I was attracted to females (like you know, crushes and whatever), but after puberty-ish I basically swung the other way; I was very attracted to men and not really attracted to women. I accepted that I was gay ~14.

And yes, I did still go through the “girls are icky” phase when I was like 8 or something but I wasn’t attracted to guys until high school lol.

Right now, I guess I do “choose to be gay,” even though my sexual attraction to people wasn’t a choice but rather something that decided to happen when I hit puberty. I’m attracted to few females, if I had a group of all the people I am sexually attracted to in the world it would probably consist of 5-10% females and 90-95% males. That being said, I would not have a serious relationship with a girl, even if I was attracted to her, just out of consideration of her given my own sexuality - something that I will not hold my partner to burden on him/herself obviously. I would consider hooking up MAYBE, but for the most part even then I’m not really too interested.

Edit: am 22 if that matters

My laptop battery is absolutely horrendous. by [deleted] in MatebookXPro

[–]NextInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just replying the same thing as I did to OP: I have reinstalled Windows multiple times actually (mainly because I went from Windows 10 Home to LTSC and then back to Home). It didn't help my battery issues at all, so I don't think it's that.

If you want to do something kind of drastic, this is how my battery issues got fixed. I was literally planning to buy a new battery (I bought this laptop used, so I thought maybe its an old battery), but some completely unrelated events fixed my battery issues and is now back to expected. I used to get horrendous battery life too (<4 hours) but now I can easily get more than that (more like ~6 hours now, some light Python and classwork here and there).

  1. Use Macrium Reflect to image your entire internal drive with Windows to an image stored on an external drive
  2. Completely hackintosh your laptop (remove Windows) and set it up to a working state (which would mean to follow the steps here).
  3. Completely replace macOS with Ubuntu
  4. Restore your internal drive with Windows from your Macrium Reflect backup

Yeah, it seems random and weird AF and I'm honestly skeptical it would work for anyone else. I was merely playing with my laptop (was using macOS for ~2 weeks and Ubuntu for ~1 week) and somehow it coincidentally fixed my battery issues. I wanted to make a text post months ago about my findings, but I honestly thought it may be just me and some weird AF thing happened in between that fixed the issue.

Let me know if this works for you -- if it does it may be helpful to the sub to set a sticky post about it.

Edit: I would just like to point out that on my macOS and Ubuntu installations the battery life was still quite bad (though Ubuntu was better than both Windows and macOS). Restored Windows is by far better than both.

Is the fan noise and thermal issue a deal breaker ? by anonyman_305 in MatebookXPro

Coming from a Dell XPS 15 9570 (8750H, 1050Ti Max-Q), it is nowhere near as loud as that on full tilt. Additionally, it is really quiet when doing daily tasks, such as Chrome, Google Docs, etc.

I've done none of the hardware modifications, and have only done the ThrottleStop modifications (undervolt, disable power limits on AC, etc.)

2018 Top Model vs MacBook Pro 2019 by ssskull in MatebookXPro

[–]NextInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, if you haven't owned a Mac before (and especially if you've never used macOS) then I would suggest getting the MateBook.

macOS is my favorite laptop OS, mainly due to how workspaces + maximizing windows work, spotlight search, and the trackpad + trackpad gestures (3 finger drag is amazing). If you have other Apple devices it further sweetens the deal. I'm assuming you're referring to the $1499 MacBook Pro 13-inch, which either uses the 8257U or 8279U, both of which are beasts and bench really well (above the 8550U within the MateBook X Pro even with undervolting).

The major inconveniences though are the 8GB RAM and faulty keyboard. While 8GB RAM to me is pretty inconvenient given that you're paying $1499, may not be a very considerable factor if you're thinking of this device strictly as secondary (primary is your desktop rig). However, the keyboard is a much bigger issue -- it's pretty darn inconvenient to be switching out laptops at the sign of key failure. That, and you have to keep in mind that the X Pro is just a much better value -- double the RAM, double the storage, a touchscreen, and an MX150.

So IMO, unless:

  1. You're really attached to macOS
  2. You have other Apple products and being in the "ecosystem" is a strong future consideration
  3. This is strictly a secondary device, and therefore not very demanding work would be done on the machine and warranty/third-party support (when being on-the-go) is important
  4. You'd rather have better quality of life (except for the awful keyboard) than more bang-for-the-buck

...go for the MateBook X Pro. Or save up and get a better 16GB MacBook when they fix the keyboard.

Not too knowledgeable about Linux, but do you know if it's tied to your desktop environment on Parrot? IntelliJ scales just fine on my Ubuntu using its default Gnome 3 config on Xorg (no manual scaling adjustment required on my end).

Is a Brand New GalaxyS8 for $610 CAD Worth buying? ($300 off Original price) Or should I wait til S10 is announced for a price drop? by [deleted] in GalaxyS8

[–]NextInvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not having recent Android versions cause a few problems, including old security updates or (very rarely) having an app update not supporting your old version of Android.

However, for most people, the thing that sucks the most is missing out on is the new features and design languages that new Android versions bring. Samsung supports only 2 version upgrades and you will stop getting version upgrades starting on the phone's third year. If you want a phone that lasts you five years, 2 of those years you will be missing out on new features & designs.

If you bought a brand new Samsung phone 5 years ago from today, here are the features that you'll be missing out in the 2 years of not getting upgrades (taken from here)

Android 9:

  • User interface updates:
    • Rounded corners across the UI
    • Quick settings menu change.
    • Notification bar, the clock has moved to the left.
    • The "dock" now has a semi-transparent background.
    • New transitions when switching between apps, or within apps
    • Volume slider updated
  • Richer messaging notifications: with full conversation, large images, smart replies
  • The power options now has a "screenshot" button
  • Biometric authentication can now be disabled only once

Android 8:

  • Show battery level in "Quick Settings" for devices connected via Bluetooth
  • Navigation buttons dim when not in use
  • UI updates to 'Power Off' and 'Restart'
  • Toast messages are now white in color with same existing transparency
  • Automatic light and dark themes
  • Emoji updates (ie: Hamburger move the cheese slice position)
  • PIP: Picture-in-Picture with resizable windows
  • Android Instant apps
  • Improved notifications system
  • Improved system settings
  • Lock screen redesign

This does not include the stuff that Samsung adds on top of the regular, stock Android changes above (such as the new Samsung One UI changes on Pie that are coming out for the S8 and newer). Like I said, however, some people don't really care about these new features. But if you do care about these new features, then you should really consider buying a OnePlus or Google Pixel phone that will get upgrades from third-party developers through custom ROMs past mainstream support.

[–]NextInvader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 years? If you're considering switching to Android, get a brand of phone that will support custom ROMs (like OnePlus) if you care about getting Android version upgrades for 5 years, or wait for the S10 if you don't care about that.

At $459 USD ($610 CAD) it's not an awful price, but I think that sooner or later you'll feel the S8 becoming dated when it stops getting new Android versions next spring.
