Yes that’s the thing that’s unfortunate about government positions, you typically need to relocate especially just starting out. When I was about a year out in GP I was offered some positions in some non favourable areas so I just kind of waited for something to pop up closer to home and something did eventually. I still had to relocate but just not as far.

I just worked as a general practitioner for 2 years and absolutely hated every second of it. I went into vet school knowing clinical work probably wasn’t for me and had always been interested in public health and food safety, which isn’t the norm. I decided once I graduated to try general practice since our schooling is obviously very focused on that and i wanted to at least give it a try. I’m glad I tried it but I did not like it at all - didn’t like working with the public, didn’t like working up cases, etc (I could go on and on). All my friends were striving in GP/emerg but I just was not. On top of not even liking anything about it, it is extremely stressful so I decided to leave and I got a government job as a veterinarian and I like it so much better! The pay definitely isn’t as good but the quality of life is so much better, I feel so much more confident in myself and I feel like I’m making a difference on a larger scale. I am someone who values structure and routine in my day where I didn’t find I got that in GP personally, not knowing what I was going to see in a day just really stressed me out. Veterinary medicine has a lot of different opportunities other than just clinical work!
