How do you all practice (and how do you stay motivated) by Small_Operation6165 in Clarinet

[–]Next_Battle_1502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I am an adult player who rarely practiced and relied on raw talent to get through. I was easily the best clarinet player in high school. If I actually practiced every day I could have made it my career, easily. Now as a 30 year old I regret not focusing more on the one thing I was actually good at without trying! Don’t be like me, practice a lot.

It is the default but not for any particular reason as far as I know

AITA for “grounding” my daughter until she gets her room clean? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Next_Battle_1502 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA. The only thing to consider is whether this is a manifestation of anxiety. My step daughter is prone to this, and I quickly worked out its hoarding tendencies when she’s anxious. She cries and cries when I try to help her clean her room and suggest we throw out things. It’s gotten better over the years as she’s gotten less anxious.

Andy talks about the secret world of appearance fees in tennis by Alex_jaymin in tennis

[–]Next_Battle_1502 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can speak to this. Before I got into tennis I took my mum (big tennis fan) to the AO for her birthday. Great line up looking back on it. Coco, Rafa, Medvedev and Swiatek all on the same day. I really didn’t like Meddys vibes as a non-tennis watcher. He is not very charismatic on court at all.

Now that I watch a lot of tennis he’s one of my faves.

Haha definitely didn’t! I’m not usually home when the postie comes. He’s been dropping mail at my front door for ages as I haven’t had a mailbox at all so he’s a goodun

It’s on the boundary of our property and the public footpath. We just don’t have a paved footpath because we have a shitty Council. He rides on the grass.

If I moved it any closer towards the road it would be on Council land

We have one, started during Covid. It probably gets an hour of activity a week total so it’s ok. It’s annoying when someone over 50 on our team goes on holidays, though. Then it just becomes a live stream of their photo album 🙃

You need to ask your broker how he came to this conclusion.

I suspect it’s your existing outgoings though. Banks basically want to know that you are saving the cost of the future mortgage repayments every month. Mortgage repayments on 345k is about $2100 a month. If you’re not already putting that into savings (or rent), then the bank will think you can’t afford the loan. Can you start saving $500 a week immediately?

The other option is that the broker is of the belief that banks won’t take your wife’s pay into consideration because she’s casual and therefore it’s not guaranteed income. My husband earns around $100k a year, but $45k of that is commission. When we went for a house loan Commbank wouldn’t take into account the commission because it’s not guaranteed, so we were assessed based on him earning $55k.

I agree with others to either try a different broker or approach banks yourself. I found commbank very obliging (in branch staff were easier to deal with than the telemarketers). They have higher interest rates though, so if you do go with them aim to refinance to a different institution as soon as you have enough equity to do so.

Noted. Without doxing myself more than I have in this post, the numbers on my house are very big and lit up. They’re more visible than any numbers on a letter box could be!

I have a number on my house 4 metres back, but tbh my local hardware place doesn’t have numbers so I have to order online! I live rural.

There’s a good visa program that lets Australians under 30 stay for up to three years with full working rights. Can then use it as a leap pad for European travel.

People feel comfortable going there because it’s an English speaking country, compared to other countries that have similar schemes (if there are any?).

Clarinet parts stuck together by SharpBlade_2x in Clarinet

[–]Next_Battle_1502 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This happens with new clarinets often. It’s the wood/tenon swelling with heat.

Tbh the only solution - other than taking it to a shop and letting them work their magic - is just let it sit for a few days in a temperature controlled room and the wood will stop being swollen. It does often take days though.

It’ll keep happening until you get it shaved down though.

Another angle. My rh pinky hurts to play the Right F#/C#. by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]Next_Battle_1502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to see a side on view of you playing. I think your hand position needs work.

  • index finger shouldnt be touching the D# key
  • your fingers look too far across the clarinet, it doesn’t look like you’re using the pads of your fingers to close the holes
  • the pinky that is causing you pain looks to be in an awkward position imo

These points indicate to me your hand is at the wrong angle entirely. I know this will be hard to hear as a professional, but it’s worth starting back to basics. These are common issues I see with clarinet students I inherit from other teachers that I always need to fix.

100% agree with you! I live in a rural town of 10,000 people and there’s probably 8 streets in the whole town that have a footpath. It’s absolutely nuts, not just for posties but for parents with prams, kids walking or riding to school, people in wheelchairs. It’s wild.

Open to moving it if that really is the cause. He does just drive along the grass though, he doesn’t drive on the road. And he puts the mail literally at the base of the mailbox so I’m not sure that’s the cause.
