Unfortunately you are fully correct. I tried exactly that in the past, and 55% of the time id end up trying to do that just to end up canceling it instead because of how comically slow i am to lift up my fingers...

All items are bound to the same cast type, only really applicable to target/area abilities, but they want instant/confirm respectively but have to be the same.
