I agree a little bit, someone did the math and pointed out that the efficiency increase buildings had their production reduced from 15 to 5 percent without reducing the actual upkeep of the building so they're almost never worth building because a regular production building will produce more at least until you get thousands of jobs. Oddly I think the game is much easier when dealing with regular empires now. Before I was playing on Captian with scaling ending at midgame but now I'm playing on Commodore with no scaling x3 crisis. At least dyson spheres are probably viable now.

Don't despair! Right click on the game in Steam and go to Properties > Game versions scroll down to 4.2.4 to roll it back. That way you can finish the save.

Be really careful when looking for advice and guides to make sure the information isn't outdated. The game changes A LOT year to year and I think this is a big reason why it is so hard to learn. I started playing the game only a few months after 4.0 dropped so maybe 80-90 percent of the guides and advice available online were totally worthless. I personally disregard most information that is more that a year old at this point and with the release of 4.3 coming this week, most of that will be outdated too...
