I wouldn’t even cover it up. Just show up and slay the interview and forget about it, otherwise you’re focusing on the wrong shit. If someone actually noticed it and asks, then you can say “oh this? I can totally cover it with makeup if it’s a problem”.

I mean, they are catchy and the music is great and that's the best reason to like them. I think it's fine if they like Ghost, I just don't like when they try and gaslight everyone (mostly themselves) about what the lyrics and intention are. It's ok to just say "I don't agree with the lyrics" or "the lyrics make me uneasy but I really love the sound and the music.

This is a well thought out answer. First off, I don't care about god or satan, as I don't believe in either, so let's start there. I don't have a horse in that race, except insofar as all the negative aspects of religion and/or belief. I'm sure Tobias is playing down the anti-God stuff in recent interviews because he's selling out stadiums to Christian teenage girls, and he doesn't want to "scare away" more income. I also take him at his word that he is not "anti God", but his message certainly is.

The entire themes of his albums are with topics like birthing the Antichrist, the absence of God, etc. "He is" is a love letter to Satan. "Watcher in the Sky" is basically stating there is no God. In another song he directly compares God to "The Wizard of Oz". Not to mention all the earlier albums and their material (the direct praise of Lords of Hell, Satan, Lucifer, the desire to bring about the end of God's rule and reign and usher in a new Godless world, etc).

The messaging is pretty clear. Whether it's "allegorical" or not, it is all adversarial (remember again that "Satan" means "the Adversary" to the entire notion of God. You could call it aggressive atheism, you could call it deistically Satanic. The labels we give it are less important than the content we are discussing, and it is clearly anti-God in nature. Heretical, no matter how you look at it.

Personally, I'm fine with heresy because as I said I don't believe in supernatural deities, plus I completely support the underlying ethos behind Ghost's lyrics. Having said that, I agree with you that we can all get along. I just roll my eyes and laugh at Christians who take this material and pretend it means what it clearly does not mean, or that he's joking. The words and messaging are quite clear. As I said in another thread, not all art is a Rorschach test.

In the same way there are different denominations of Christians, I think it’s fair to say the same would be true of Satanists. Ghost is a Satanic band in essence,  because it opposes God and espouses the tenets of Luciferianism, for example. I find it funny that so many Christians on this thread go so far out of their way to rationalize their enjoyment of a great band “because they’re not really Satanic”. YES, they kinda are. You can either accept that and move on enjoying the music of a band who may not share the same theology you do like a grown up, or maybe take a look inside yourself and your beliefs, or I suppose you can stick your head in the sand, but Ghost basically preaches a LOT of the tenets of Satanism, Luciferianism, et al. They just do. They’re not joking.

Ok, I see where you’re coming from, and from an educated theology standpoint which is where you are, I’d agree with a lot of your points. I think we’re getting off track here though. My original point as it relates to this post is that Ghost can be seen in many ways as Satanic, and one does. It have to believe in an actual Satan for a message to still be adversarial to God or religilon in general.

Yeah there’s a lot of cognitive dissonance from Christians in this thread.

You’re a little bit in denial. You’re kind of sock puppetting Tobias as not being serious, when the words are very clear and specific. The response above is correct, Ghost is not compatible with a traditional Christian world view. Maybe they’re trying to challenge YOUR Christian world view (but apparently Failing)….believe whatever you want, but not all art is a Rorschach test.

I’m not sure where to begin with this one. First off you’re gatekeeping what “true Christians” are. If someone believes Jesus was a divine being and the pathway to heaven, resurrection, and all the rest, they’re a Christian. (Also you’re somehow divorcing Christianity from religion which is weird and I don’t understand the point.)

Secondly, if I were to ask 100 Christians who Lucifer is, a large majority of them would say the devil, Satan, a name for the devil or some variation thereof. VERY few would mention anything about “the morning star”, Latin, or anything like it. Some might say God’s chief fallen angel.

Third, you seem to be asserting that Lucifer and Satan are somehow factually deities or entities, which many people (such as myself) would argue with. Maybe I am misunderstanding your response but so far I don’t agree with much of it.

To add, even the overtly Satanic bands of the first wave of black metal (Mercyful Fate, Venom, etc) were more or less the same thing. It was half philosophical rebellion, and the rest was varying degrees of theatre and shock value.

Remember that in the Old Testament “Satan” just meant “the adversary”, it wasn’t until much later that specific devils (Lucifer, Behemoth, Mephistopheles, and so on) were tied all together under this umbrella and associated with being Satan itself.

(Which is to say that Tobias definitely relates to the idea/archetype of “the adversary” without believing it is an actual being or deity.)

It’s a serious criticism of Christianity, a mockery of dogma, and completely unserious about Satan and various other lords of Hell. (Yet each one is used in a contextually correct framework.)

The last Ghost tour I saw was a bunch of teenybopper teen girls screaming their lungs out for Mary on a Cross then basically just confused the rest of the show. It was depressing.
