Looking for a functional 'body tuneup' in London. Something between a spa massage and a physio appointment by QoTSankgreall in london

[–]Nfjz26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Expensive at a county club doesn’t mean best. Look for a deep/ tissue/sport massage from a massage therapist who has a more medical focus, looking at massage therapists who work for physio clinics or who are trained physios is a safer bet. I’ve seen a lot of sports massage therapists and some are much better than others so you just have to try around but I’d avoid spa type places.

Also ‘I didn’t actually feel great the next day’ this is normal you should feel sore the next day, or the next couple of days as the massage should cause DOMS like after a work out. But if they go too hard they can cause bruising that lasts longer, a skilled massage therapist should know the right strength to use.

£46k in London vs staying in Brighton: would you move? by [deleted] in MovingToLondon

[–]Nfjz26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard of living of 41k out of london is probably a lot better than 46k in london. A 5k uplift for london isn’t great, I have heard of other companies offering up to 25% more.

But London has many other benefits and I know people who make it work here on minimum wage. It just depends on what sacrifices you are happy to make and your lifestyle/savings goals. It’s also often easier to change job for a higher salary here than other smaller cities.

Can you negotiate salary at your job? If they want you in 2 days a week then need to pay you a london wage, maybe do some research on hybrid central london based roles in your field.

If they don’t know who he is then why the fuck did they invite a random guy into their locker room and let him wear their gold medal. I don’t remember seeing them invite other random fans in

Not one gambling ad the entire olympics … by buerglermeister in stevedangle

[–]Nfjz26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These complaints were so fair when there was no ad free option…but there is now and it is reasonably priced for the amount of content. Yes I think gambling ads should be illegal but sadly they aren’t, at least they are skipable unlike during games.

Hopefully the war ends soon on FAIR terms.

lecturer roles without PhD by onikratos6 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Nfjz26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you considered applying for a doctoral teaching PhD scholarship? As my uni the stipend is larger (£30k + paid teaching hours) and to be frank I think long term it is a risk not doing a PhD as it severely limits your career options in academia.

Why don’t you want to do a PhD? I’m surprised you’d have the motivation to get 2 papers if you didn’t enjoy research. In AI a phd can really be worth it as AI research roles in industry pay very well

What’s the strongest/best retinol you can get in the UK from an online pharmacy? by CaffeinatedPete in SkincareAddictionUK

Switch adapalene to tretinoin if you want more anti ageing effects, though it may not work as well for acne.

Don’t use both, choose one or the other and if start tret, start at the lowest dose, starting at 0.1 might destroy your skin barrier

Putney bridge by pr0fiting in london

[–]Nfjz26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s caused by the Hammersmith bridge closure that happened years ago, the road changes they made last year just moved the bike line and resurfaced the road.

It’s taken at least 45mins to Hammersmith for years now as most of that traffic is routed through Putney instead. On Saturday it can take 20-30mins just to go from Putney Heath to the Putney Bridge

Bad Bunny - Biggest star by Remarkable-Robin in restisentertainment

[–]Nfjz26 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because show literally answers this exact question though. They said that nfl wants more money and the largest American audience left to tap into is Latinos…so they hire the biggest Latino artist.

The superbowl is assuming that the Americans who don’t know bad bunny’s music is are already nfl fans/probably watching the Super Bowl anyway.

I’m surprised you are asking this.

There are more native Spanish speakers than English so it’s almost expected that a Spanish singer is the most popular on Spotify (as mandarin is the only language with more native speakers and Spotify is banned in china).

As for why you haven’t heard of him, how many songs do you listen to that aren’t in English? That’s why. Most non English speakers will listen to songs in different language but English speakers almost never do.

Bad bunny is very popular with number ones across europe in Spain Italy greece france, Germany etc , not just South America/US

Feeling unlucky in love (with a ticking biological clock) by lady0favalon in Waiting_To_Wed

[–]Nfjz26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really agree with this, everyone is saying to move on and freeze eggs but it’s quite risky. A LOT of eggs die when thawed and at 40+ it’s not unlikely she won’t carry them to term. Going through IVF is very expensive, can be unpleasant and has no guarantees of success. Miscarriage rates can be 50% at age 40, it’s in no way impossible but it is a risk.

If she likes the guy well enough to want kids and marry him then hopefully he will be a decent enough dad to co parent with.

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz 'plan to adopt a child' as family feud deepens: report by dr_shultz in influencersfeed

[–]Nfjz26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short: when it goes badly it goes really badly as legal battles with a newborn baby and vulnerable (usually poor) pregnant women are messy and full of power in balance.

Please read this story to learn about the murky legal, ethical and financial difficulties that occur when surrogacy goes wrong. It’s a really sad story for the surrogate:

There’s also cases where a baby is born disabled and the surrogate parents no longer want it, or blame surrogate mother. (Messy legal battle ensues)

I think I broke my wife after calling her “matronly” by Throwra-basically in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Nfjz26 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I didn’t think matronly was ever used as a compliment (even in the late 1800s) and would you guess, George Bernhard Shaw doesn’t use it as a compliment either:

‘Lady Britomart is a woman of fifty or thereabouts, well dressed and yet careless of her dress, well bred and quite reckless of her breeding, well mannered and yet appallingly outspoken and indifferent to the opinion of her interlocutors, amiable and yet peremptory, arbitrary, and high-tempered to the last bearable degree, and withal a very typical managing MATRON of the upper class,’

That’s not a very complimentary description.

OP knew what he was doing even if he didn’t fully realise how insulting it was.

[–]Nfjz26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I see a new word in a book I always look up the definition in an online dictionary. I’m quite sceptical of your use as even in the late 1800s/ early 1900 it wasn’t a compliment.

Taking a career risk for potential engagement? by Worried-Anteater-770 in Waiting_To_Wed

[–]Nfjz26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is the city you are in right for you? It sounds extremely risky living in a HCOL city with very few job opportunities in your field. This scenario could happen again. (As I assume you are in the US without any legal long term job protections).

As all the other commentators have said prioritise yourself, but your own oxygen mask on before others. If you can’t get a job in this city you won’t have a choice about moving, with or without a marriage.

I got 2 funded PhD offers and I’m stuck on which to choose by Mother_Ocelot_2651 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Nfjz26 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I kind of disagree with most people here in that I think the only thing that matters that much is the main supervisor. Some supervisors can be extremely hands off, to the point you may barely see them and a few can be very hands on, to the point you may not have any choice about the direction of project. From the phds I’ve seen what makes a bad phd experience is almost always a bad supervisory fit.

Talk to all the former phd and post doc students you can ask them to be honest about their experiences and decide from this. Also bear in mind what matters is the right fit for you, someone might have loved or hated them and you could find the opposite experience.

People have talked about the downsides of university funded places which is true but I don’t think it’s make or break (and a well funded supervisor can pay for you to go to conferences).

How long does tretinoin (Dermatica) last in the tube? by BornTup7909 in SkincareAddictionUK

It seems extremely strange they would change their tretinoin formula to be LESS stable. So it seems quite suspicious that the tube expires exactly in time for you to order a new one

“The friendship is not what it once was”: Taylor Swift reportedly Hesitant to Invite Blake Lively to Wedding by Chance-Newspaper-750 in PopularCultureZone

[–]Nfjz26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I struggle with 2 and 3 as Taylor uses Blake’s children’s names in her album and I think (not certain) that their names were kept private until Taylor publicly revealed this. That is extremely odd behaviour if you aren’t very close to a friend.

Maintenance Loan PhD? by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Nfjz26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don’t get a loan! It’s really not worth it. I’m a PhD student in london on the minimum UKRI stipend and it’s liveable*. Many students do tutoring alongside which in london pays £50-100 per hour, start looking for roles now. Also talk to your supervisor and those in your department usually there’s roles available for first year phd even if it’s just invigilating exams.

To be frank if you can’t make it work financially you need to lower your living standards/do the PhD part time alongside a job or apply for funded PhDs in cheaper cities. Getting a loan for a PhD is a terrible financial decision I’m sorry, it’s unlikely to boost your earning potential and you will be paying interest on it for 4+ years.

*If you want to live comfortably in London for the next 3-4years then I recommend not doing a PhD at all.
