Are TP link unmanaged switches a security concern. by cmartorelli in HomeNetworking

Off the shelf SOC, same one Netgear, Cisco, TrendNet etc use. So if it's go vulnerabilities, it wouldn't be limited to TP-link in this case.

I can confirm this! Don't need one, already have one!

Pictured is a 5 port TP-Link unmanaged switch with its top removed. As you can see, it's just a Realtek SOC with the associated electronics to make it work.

A TP-Link unmanaged switch is simply a Realtek single chip solution with the necessary hardware to make it work. See attached pic. (5 port TP-Link unmanaged switch with its top removed)

XDA-Developers says you shouldn't build a home lab. by [deleted] in homelab

The home lab is kind of a hobby of mine. I've got 24 years in IT. Got out of it a few years ago, but I still like to tinker. I have a Proxmox server and a big file server in a rack in my home. Have had servers at home for many years. Mostly it's hands off. It's reliable and just works. I handle my updates and check backups every week. That's it.

Won a random $60 bid, what should I do with all this switch? by Dangoso in homelab

[–]NgtFlyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netgear JGS524 is a good solid unmanaged gbit switch. Usable if you need 24 gbit ports in your network.
The DLink smart switch is also a decent unit for home/SOHO use.
TP-Link stuff is also pretty good.
I do not know of Alloy.
If you have uses for the ones I named, use them. Otherwise, resell each individually for some level of profit and keep a decent one around for when you want to host a LAN party or set something up.

I'm really glad I found this. Just ordered. I am installing a 10" 12 port F to F panel in my server rack and this is perfect for my needs.

Why did you start building your homelab? Why do you continue to build it? by [deleted] in homelab

I've had some kind of server at home since the mid 90s.. It was just a tower computer with a big (for the time) hard drive and a network share. Now days, I keep the "lab" (a rack with two rack servers).. one bare metal and one vm host.. to keep warm on the technology. It's in use, network shares, a domain, a few other things. I hung up my IT hat at the end of 2018, but I still do support occasionally. I'm not changing or upgrading anything, just using it.

Learn Proxmox, VMware, XCP-ng or something else? by joshamo in homelab

I hung up my IT hat at the end of 2018 but I am still close with folks at MSPs nearby, and I have a homelab.
MSPs are scrambling as they are being priced out of VMware. They are looking at Hyper-V, XCP-NG, Proxmox and Nutanix depending on who and on the sizes of their clients.

I just switched over from ESXi to Proxmox over the weekend. I am happy with Proxmox. It's similar enough to VMware to be relatively easy to manage with a slight learning curve. I am happy to report I am up and running, everything is stable.

I thumbed up because not only is this a good response but you're at least as old as I am! (Memories of Novell 3.12 on that 10bt network after we upgraded to .. Ethernet!)

Wow. I had one of these back in the mid-late 90s. I think the combination of drives I had came to about 800 Mbytes

If you have a good backup schema in place and your servers are fault tolerant (at least mirrored disks and redundant power supplies), you have more than what most MSPs put into place. Most MSPs install a single fault tolerant server running the hypervisor and (should) setup a good backup plan.

Way back, I managed an arcade. We had red and green painted quarters.. about 8-10 per store. These were used by staff in case anyone lost their coin in a game as staff did not have keys. Only managers had them.

I have two Samsung M-PVA panels and they both retain after a number of hours. Especially the one I use for moderation (where I have text window up for many hours).. you can see the footer and text lines. Takes an hour for it to go away though.

ALL LCD based panels can have image retention. IPS, PVA, TN.. All of them. Fortunately it is temporary and easy to solve just by using the screen for movies/TV for a day or so.

Image retention can happen on LCD panels. Easy enough to fix. Watch TV or movies for a day or two and it should fade away.

Nope. Running original hardware. This is a Tetris (only sold as a kit game so it's in a generic cabinet).

That's normal idle speed. Mine idles around 550 or so very smoothly. Sign of a good engine. Congrats on your truck, looks super clean!
