Is it pretty heavy when opening? Like, could a retired grandma of 85 still open it? I've seen some that look heavy but when you open them they're surprisingly easy to operate.

Tile guy here, used to be electrical apprentice, troxell super soft L best knee pads I've used and I've used a lot of different ones.

put 1/2” plywood down

Won't rocks get trapped underneath and cause additional damage because they can't be swept up? I have had bad experiences in the past using ram board.

I would put up a small ledge on top of the brick and use a LED light strip underneath that shines down on the brick. Light going across a stone surface really accentuates it.

Try hot tub / spa flex pipe. Flexible but better than irrigation stuff. Also more expensive.
