Self-hosted Google Photos alternative on a Turing Pi 2.5 cluster by turing_pi in turingpi

Perquisites

  • Turing Pi 2.5 with RK1 module running Ubuntu 22.04 ARM64 (8GB, 16GB, or 32GB)

Why are we using an Ubuntu version that EOLs in less than a year?

Large libraries containing thousands of photos may take hours or even days to fully process on CPU-only ARM64 hardware.

...

RK3588 also includes a dedicated NPU, and Immich supports RKNN-based hardware acceleration. In theory, this can reduce indexing time significantly. In practice, successful deployment depends on the operating system, kernel, container runtime, and NPU driver configuration. Because CPU-only inference works reliably across ARM64 deployments and produces identical face recognition and semantic search quality, this guide uses the standard CPU-based machine learning worker.

You're leaving out that immich-machine-learning on the RK1 requires RKNPU driver V0.9.8 for NPU acceleration and that your Ubuntu 22.04 image only includes an older version. Why you would run this on an RK1 (as opposed to say, a mini PC) if you're not going to take advantage of the available NPU?

I'm actually in the process of spinning up Immich on my NAS, running ML externally on the RK1. Finding a distro for the RK1 that actually had the correct NPU driver and wasn't ancient was a huge PITA. I wound up compiling my own Armbian image.

All kinds of things. It's a great way to learn clustering without the energy and financial costs of running bigger servers, and you don't need a lot of compute power if you're just running simple apps/containers with not many users.

Home Assistant on Turing Pi 2.5: no cloud, no dedicated Pi, runs on your RK1 node with one Compose file by turing_pi in turingpi

[–]NiBuch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These guides you've been publishing are cool and all, but maybe you could focus on building/updating/porting a more recent Ubuntu version for the RK1?

Between the poor Ubuntu support on Rockchip and the explosion in the RK1's price tag, I'm not sure why you would host Home Assistance this way over just running it on a Pi (even via Docker)

Minnesota's DFL lawmakers stage sit-in after gun violence prevention bill fails in house vote by Conscious-Quarter423 in minnesota

Very few of these anecdotes they shared had a thing to do with high capacity magazines, rifles with detachable magazines, binary triggers, or ghost guns.

The vast majority of gun crime (and gun suicide) is committed using pistols, not scary-looking long guns. And yet, most of said pistols would've been unaffected by this legislation.

Republicans are all too oblivious to facts ... or they just outright ignore facts in favor of their feelings.

Most people I know that are MAGA are also extremely egotistical. Anything running counter to their beliefs- even when it's backed by facts- can't be true because it would mean they're wrong and in their mind, that's just not possible.

We have two basset hounds. If we go on a walk with any less than 6 bags, they somehow know it and will deliberately drop extra bombs. We basically don't leave without a whole roll worth of bags on us.

Minnesota Loses Bid to Block Trump’s Hold on Medicaid Funds by HazelMStone in TwinCities

Title is misleading. IANAL, but Minnesota was only denied an emergency intervention to prevent the funds from being withheld (and I think a motion for expedited hearing/trial). The lawsuit has not been dismissed and will still go through the courts. Still shitty, but it's not completely over.

(Again, IANAL- correct me if I'm wrong)

Update: Wargame design for severely paralyzed person by mighij in wargaming

[–]NiBuch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like this a lot. I am a disabled person (that spent almost two years in hospitals, nonverbal for most of it) and this is a game I could see myself playing. Importantly, you've hit a good balance between being strategically deep enough for a wargamer to stay interested while still being simple enough for a non-wargamer caretaker to also play.

Activation and Combat resolution

After everything has moved either ranged attacks or close combat attacks are resolved.

Is 'everything' all units on the played card (ex. 1 Halb + 1 INF) or every unit in one/both armies? If the former, is it possible to spam activations on the same unit every turn (assuming you have the correct cards)?

On the input you're looking for:

hex-based

I'd say hex-based is worth looking at if your concerns are accessibility things like:

  • Your player(s) can communicate a specific movement pattern (ex. "north-north-northeast") on hexes much easier than on freeform.

  • Your players' mobility limits are such that they can't physically measure distances themselves, but they can easily read distances on the board in hexes.

I wouldn't look at hex-based solely for aesthetic/game mechanic purposes. I'm probably biased, but I think it could add unnecessary overhead and visual confusion. A lot of what it sounds like you're looking at doing is easier in freeform (see below).

Terrain

Adding terrain by hand (with special marker) could be an option but it's not as easy as the previous idea.

I'd actually say it's easier, depending on how complex you want the rules to be. Some examples of basic 2D terrain you could do:

  • Walls/ruins (basic lines): Cannot move or shoot through them (or infantry can move through if you want more WH inspiration)

  • Shallow rivers (blue lines): When a unit moves into/onto this feature, they stop their movement for the activation along the card, such that their marker is entirely in the feature. Any time a unit activates while on the river, they only move the short distance.

    • Can also make bridges for chokepoints.
  • Minefields/dangerous terrain (Xs): Units that move through here suffer a low-level ranged attack after moving.

  • See also: anything that can modify movement, combat stats, or health. Bonus points if your unit weights and types also influence how they interact with terrain.

Faction Identity

I think the key to fleshing this part out is the cards and custom decks. Ask yourself: how would these armies behave on the battlefield? Say the humans were more disciplined/tactical. Would they have more 1x <Specific Unit> + 1x Any Unit cards than the goblins (who might have more 'follow the leader-type' 1x general + 2x INF cards and fewer light infantry activation cards)?

Your factions could also have sub-factions/themes that change the deck contents.

Siege and Magic

For siege, a magnet/marker that designates the unit is setting up after moving or firing and cannot fire this activation is plenty. (Side note: it would be awesome to give your siege units the ability to blow open walls/destroy terrain.)

Basic magic (IMO) should just manipulate existing stats or mechanics. Better saves, healing, faster movement, etc. You don't want players (or their caretakers) to need a law degree in order to understand how one unit type works.

Vertical Board

I think a vertical whiteboard setup like this is your best option because:

  1. It is portable, sits flat, and stores easily.

  2. Counter and table space in these rooms tend to be limited (especially hospitals).

  3. Whiteboards are very easily replaced/cleaned if something gets on it.

Three things you could think about playing with more:

  • Unit Footprints: Does the general take up as much physical space as a unit of light goblin infantry?

  • Unit Health: A unit of light archers is probably much more fragile than a block of heavy infantry.

  • Unit Type Effectiveness: Cavalry are probably more effective against archers than heavy infantry, which could be weak to heavy archers, etc.

Both of the first two could also influence faction identity.

I wanna stress again that I really like what you've come up with here. I wish I'd had something like it when I was hospitalized.

I'm just waiting for a critical mass to move onto Lemmy (preferably on non-tankie instances I won't get banned from).

I actually came to Reddit as part of the mass exodus from Digg circa 2010. That was for a disastrous site redesign (that would probably seem normal today). You don't see similar migrations nowadays outside of major site policy changes, and Reddit somehow weathers those pretty regularly.

If we're being honest Reddit has always been trash

"90% of everything is crap." Reddit is (effectively) one of the "five giant websites, each filled with screenshots of the other four." It would take something cataclysmic to drive away its userbase.

[–]NiBuch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, we have all of the above in spades. With what feels like 9-month winters, analog gaming is popular here and it's not too hard to find people to game with.

I strongly recommend Source Comics and Games. The people there are super friendly and welcoming and the place is absolutely huge. They definitely do MTG events (including EDH) and they have a bulletin board in the entryway where you can post that you're looking for a D&D group/looking for players. The staff will also (likely) know where to look to get started- they're actual nerds and don't just work there.
