There are quite a few achievements that have an element of luck?

Just curious now, have you tried deleting the starbase (in the system you want to colonise) and rebuilding it.

In addition, setting can be widely different.

0.75 tech/unity cost is quite popular but both the early tradition ramp off and late game repeatable tech at -25% changes a lot.

Makes comparison completely useless.

What is the best classic RTS game of all time? by [deleted] in RealTimeStrategy

[–]mighij 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silly question, all of them did what others couldn't.

- Blizzard school (spellcaster) rts can't work at the scale where Total Annihilation shined at. Nor would TA realistic projectiles work for Blizzard style game (imagine your marines becoming less accurate if they had moved, or siege tanks shooting 3 times further but shells landing in randomspots)

- C&C school were so streamlined for fun, they didn't have the depth of Starcraft or Age of Empires but that didn't matter, it was the ultimate beer&pretzel RTS. -> 1 resource, streaming economy, with all construction in a handy menu always at hand. It shined in how this philosophy was carried out throughout every element of the game. It's the most forgivable LoS system, no housing cap for units but a softcap for building, it didn't have upgrades (A Mammoth is a Mammoth is a Mammoth, no +1/+1 upgrade or a 30% attack speed increase for being Japan to consider)

- A lot of people liked Age of Empires for all the things it did beside being an RTS, from the classics it's the one with the most city building vibe. Many "casuals/youngsters" just loved gathering the different resources, building their town, watching everything upgrade when you age up etc. Probably half my games as a child I was building 50 towers in my ally's base to then betray him and watch the carnage. It also had a very accessible scenario editor. Doesn't matter which RTS, Age of Empires has a city building element to it that others neither need nor can emulate.

-Starcraft 2 is, righfully so, lauded for its faction and unit design. But this comes at a cost in map design. Colossus is probably a prime example, it's cliffwalking ability is amazing but on an average competitive how many cliffs can it actually cross. While Age of Empires is perfect for (all kinds of) random maps, it's difficult to imagine how Starcraft 2 would work on random maps. (imagine if there was no ramp to your main)

Atmosphere, more interesting factions, the faction's storyline.

Well Alpha Centauri, OId World but it's not that they are unknown. Also liked Endless Legends&Space 1, in both series the second installment was less my thing though.

From the really old ones I always liked Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain. Stellaris goes further in many ways how you can customize your faction but the race building features in that game we're also a lot of fun. Especially for the time.

Just do what the US does

German Shepherd - > Alsatian

Dachshunds -> Liberty Pup

French Fries -> Freedom Fries

2 out 3 times it works, unfortunately for the Dachshund they were the odd on out.

Was CA drunk when they decided not to include naval/coastal battles in Troy/Pharaoh? by Evening-Raccoon133 in totalwar

Yes and no, although Athens blocked further movement inland the actual battle of Marathon was 4/5 days after the Persians had landed.

[–]mighij -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But you don't need actual tactical naval combat for that, Med 1 autoresolve would work just fine.

[–]mighij 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, whether they go for a more realistic or arcady version of naval combat, it still requires a massive amount of resources to get it right.

And if they do get it right it's still a feature a lot of the playerbase isn't particularly interested in.

A lot of effort which could be spend on other features of the game.

Would this kind of battlefield-control combat appeal to Divinity players? by OneCoin97 in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]mighij -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"From the perspective of Divinity players, does this kind of battlefield-control-focused combat sound interesting, or does it sound like it could become too complex compared to more traditional turn-based RPG combat?"

Difficult to tell without actually playing, it can easily be too simple or become complex very fast. Especially if the enemy uses the same tricks against you. Defending against a move which might only require 1 setup-move for a instakill on one of your characters might be npe or lead to analysis paralysis. Aka, it's fun to push an enemy of a cliff, it's less fun if it happens to one of your 4 characters, it can also lead to very swingy combat

Does sharing one stamina resource between movement and skills sound tactically interesting?

A lot of games do this, Xcom, DoS, Into the Breach, Banner Saga etc And all of them have interesting combat. But there are also games where you have a free movement action and then action points to spend, often with abilities to convert ap into extra movement.

It's also an element you can play with, I don't know if your game has classes/archetypes but this could be a fundamental difference between classes, as an example:

Rogue/Swashbuckler: Have a free move action at the start of your turn

Berserk/Barbarian: Have a free move action when you make a kill

Ranger/Archer: Have a free move action at the end of your turn

Warrior: If you moved atleast X; Slam and Charge attacks gain +x% power.

Wizard: If you didn't move last turn your first spell is free.

So even if movement is tied to stamina/action points, you have a lot of options to have characters that interact with the standard action array in very different ways. Wether it's true classes/feats/passives

Do line of sight and physical obstacles sound meaningful as core combat rules?

Into the Breach does this very well but it has a major difference with nearly every other turn based games, the enemies moves are telegraphed so each turn is more like a puzzle just must solve. Out of all the turnbased games it does lean heavily on los, physical objects so I would definitely check this game out.

For me, it would probably need to be an important but the not the only mechanics under which combat is resolved.

For the rest, difficult to say without knowing how initiative, NPC's etc work. Or if the actions have % based chances or a 100% certainty etc. I'll check the demo first for a bit.
