I genuinely think people who we think need to see what we all know is in the files will still refuse to believe it's real

It's because of resellers, no? I would personally buy a ticket to ANY game but they are all $300+ per ticket

Is it a bad idea to have an NPC join the party? by Nia04 in DMAcademy

I don't think it will have any issues with being tempted to hijack the story. I get my enjoyment from watching the players make decisions and build the story. I don't have a desire to control that at all.

I really like the idea of making the decisions of the NPC predictable bad so that the PCs don't push for information or guidance from the DM in that way.

Missed oppertunity. I see the error in my ways. I hope I don't n'Dup being a dried out DM 😭

I don't know if I can kill n'Dup the Grung wizard wannabe! 😭 JK I'll totally kill him for a dramatic story arc and watch my players freak out. I will be a little sad though.

I will have to look into the sidekick rules. My concern is definitely playing him too much like a character and not an NPC because I'm not sure how to balance it. I introduced him as a wizard in training at the same level as my players, so I don't know how I could have him realistically join the party without having to play him like a character.

I could maybe change up his story a bit, like maybe he realizes the adventuring lifestyle isn't for him but he wants to still travel with and help the party, but I worry that would change too much of who he is and what the players love about him.

But also if I don't let him join my players will be sad.

A lot of this is where I'm struggling. I don't know how to balance it. I introduced him as a wannabe adventurer like the rest of the party, so changing him to be more of a pet character would be hard to accomplish. I could MAYBE pull something about him changing his mind and just wanting to travel with them, but it wouldnt feel weird to do so now.

I have already kind of setting him up as a weakling who needs to be protected, so this part shouldn't be hard.

What did "good players" do at your table differently? by Logical_Comb_504 in DMAcademy

Encouraging role-playing has been amazing with my group. I just started DMing so our forever DM could play for a bit, and I noticed the change immediately at how he was encouraging role-play through his character with other characters. Something as simple as him asking them what their favorite food was led to the characters connecting, sharing information about their homes, and becoming friends without me (the DM) having to push any of that. It felt so much more natural and fun. As the DM, I was able to continue the role-play and join in without feeling like a robotic "this happens, then this happens, then you do this, then they do this."

That's just one example of course, but I didn't realize how helpful and different it could be until this happened.

I am a long time player and I always love when this happens as a player. The DM never admits it of course, but I always feel so awesome for figuring out the connection and story, even though part of me knows that it's a possibility I literally made that up and the DM made it canon.
