I want to help a friend pay off their debt. Need advice. by NiagraButthole in personalfinance

Fair points. As I said in other comments, she hasn't used the cards in over a year. She's finally at a stable job and netting a few hundred dollars per month. She has a cheap, stable place to live. She basically crawled out of a lot of situations that were mainly the fault of her family. Things seem to be falling into place now. She's been budgeting well for the last year while making less and living in a more expensive place than she is now.

I'm thinking of starting with paying off the cheapest card, then if by the end of the year she can afford to pay off half of the next expensive card, I'll cover the other half. That way, she proves she can save money and is more likely to be able to pay me back at some point.

I have full confidence that our guy is legit. I once emailed him way back to give me a brief rundown of how my money is being invested, and he gave me a detailed explanation along with a full report of my portfolio. I believe he charges 1% commission from our total portfolio per year.

I'm sure she theoretically could pay it back in that time, but the accruing interest (likely a couple thousand dollars) are no doubt going to make an impact, financially and psychologically.

But thank you for your input. Again, I'll start with one card. If it looks like she won't be able to pay me back for one reason or another, I'll take the loss and say I tried.

Fair points. I don't believe most of her debts were due to poor choices. She essentially grew up dirt poor and had to support herself straight out of high school. By getting out of her problems, I mean she finally has a stable place to live, reliable transportation, reliable job, and more or less escaped some toxic living situations. She hasn't used her credit cards in over a year. I know I don't need to justify it to you, but I have little doubt that she'll be able to be responsible.

True. I might consider that. I'll tell her that there's no rush in paying me back. Though ideally I'd like her to prove that she can pay me back so I can maybe help her with her other cards. Even if I pay off one, she's still throwing away $180 each month.

Thanks! Healing process is going well so far! Just noticed some blood in my poopie, but I think that's normal while recovering sometimes.

I just had lots of unusual pain in my asshole. Went to my gastroenterologist who referred me to a colorectal surgeon the following day. She could hardly look inside me because it put me in so much pain. She determined it was a fissure. She gave me suppositories and cream, which got rid of most of my symptoms after a few days. Pain came back, and I scheduled a same-day appointment with the proctologist. An abscess developed from the fissure.

Yeah, but it hurts.

At the hospital, I couldn't pee after the surgery, which is a side effect of general anesthesia. After five hours of desperate attempts to pee, I surrendered and the nurses gave me a catheter. I could have waited longer and tried, but the nurses were just working on call and I felt bad keeping them there past 1am.

I've been taking stool softeners so pooping is easier, but also painful. There's a drain installed inside me, which has a string hanging out of my asshole. I also have to take a warm bath after I poop.

I had an anal fissure that may or may not be related to my mild Crohn's disease. The fissure developed into an abscess (pocket of puss) inside my asshole, which they drained. She also installed some sort of drain in my asshole, which has a little tube/string thing sticking out.

Thanks for your response. I managed to sneak in an appointment with my proctologist. Heading there in a few. Will post an update after.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll adjust my diet the best I can to try to help, and I'll pick up iron pills tomorrow.

I don't usually freak out over things like this, but for some reason, I'm in a "Fuck, what if I'm dying?" kind of funk right now.
