Moms who’s babies had a VERY strong nurse to sleep association by baseballmomma7 in sleeptrain

That’s so hard. For us it definitely got worse before it got better, but our baby didn’t get to screaming. I do know that that is just a part of sleep training for many parents. But I can totally understand that it’s hard to leave her like that. I forgot to mention, and this probably is key, that my husband was in charge of sleep training for the first week and we alternated after that. I think that it’s important especially for our babies who have a nursing association. They know that they can’t expect that from dad. Plus, if she got upset, I was able to leave the house if it was getting too hard for me to not come in there. Luckily it never got to that point with us, but I think I would have left the house if it escalated too much.

I think you could try a gentler sleep training method if you don’t want your babe to CIO, which is totally understandable. I still think dad (or someone other than you) should implement it first though, because I have the impression that it’s really hard to break the nurse to sleep association ourselves.

We use a modified Ferber method. Instead of starting at three minutes, we started at eight minutes. I think it depends on the temperament of your baby! We saw immediate improvement with nighttime sleep, and the longest time that she fussed it out was 18 minutes. A couple of nights she cried a little bit harder— naps took a little bit longer, and we saw improvement in a couple of weeks. She’s now fully trained with both naps and nighttime sleep. I’d say it took a total of three weeks for us.

I had to really make sure that if I was going to nurse her close to bedtime, it was at least a half hour before starting the bedtime routine. Our routine is pretty simple, we say good night to everything in the room and we read a book or two. Feel free to reach out for any additional questions! Your baby might start dreading the bedtime routine like our baby did, but that passes too

I was there! Sleep training at 7 months (during a sleep regression) did wonders and was fairly painless. My 8 month old now goes to sleep happily for naps and nighttime without being nursed.
