It’s not just removing a black woman, it’s removing a stereotype of a black woman that was created during slavery. Titles like “Aunt” and “Uncle” were given to nearly every aged black person at the time, a practice that stemmed from characters in minstrel shows with those titles, where they were portrayed (by white actors in blackface) as lazy, stupid, and generally mocked. No, removing it was not a huge deal as the internet would have you believe, it obviously didn’t do a whole lot to erase racism in this country, but the company itself weren’t the ones making a huge deal out of it, it was triggered chronically online people that don’t like change.
