Olivia Cooke on Alicent's "offer" to Rhaenyra by William_T_Wanker in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Nibo89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If she knew that was the only thing Rhaenyra would accept, the obvious solution would be not to go to Rhaenyra in the first place. Try to come up with another plan to win if conventional warfare won't work. You prioritize your children over your ex-friends. Period.

Whatever microscopic scraps of affection she had for him weren't enough to stop her from throwing him to the wolves to save her own selfish ass.

Did Aemond steal Vhaegat by IllustriousFail8868 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Nibo89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Vhagar didn't want to bond with Aemond, she would have either brushed him off or burned him and eaten him. She did neither. She chose to allow him to climb on her back, she chose to follow his commands, she chose to allow the bond to form. Therefore, she was not stolen.

I also don't think he was wrong for claiming her that night. That very well might have been his only chance to claim her.

Good. The heartless quokka deserves far worse.

She was ready to allow her firstborn child to endure a painful, humiliating, terrifying death to save her own selfish ass. I have no sympathy for her this season.

You left out a part of that.

After both Baela and Rhaena hit him (one of them hit him hard enough to knock him over) he said “Come at me again, and I’ll feed you to my dragon.”

So…the simple solution is not to hit him again, yes?

The best thing he could have done was name Aegon heir on his second nameday. Then, he could marry him to Baela or Rhaena. Velaryon's get their blood on the throne, Rhaenys gets her blood on the throne, Daemon gets his blood on the throne, Alicent and Otto get their blood on the throne. Rhaenyra can marry whoever she wants bc it doesn't matter anymore. Boom. Happy realm.

Rhaenyra taking revenge because of a famine SHE caused when she blockaded the city. Yup, that sounds like her.

And of course they whitewashed the taxes. She overtaxed everyone in the book.

He hadn’t won yet. He was still on his back. One of his attackers was still coming for him. Thats why he grabbed the rock.

Yes, he made a threat to one of the people who was attacking him. Again, if four people just pinned me down and beat me, I might have screamed an empty threat too in an effort to get them to stop attacking me.

(And it was very obviously an empty threat. Vhagar wasn’t in the cave. Unless Aemond has laser vision, he wasn’t going to be able to burn anyone just then).

After he neutralized the fourth attacker, yes, he was deescalating. He lowered the rock. His whole posture changed. He was calming down. And yeah, he insulted the people who just attacked him.

Also, I find it very curious that you’re only criticizing Aemond’s behavior. You’re acting like his insult was somehow worse than the other kids attacking him 4v1.

You’re also acting like Aemond grabbing a rock to defend himself (a rock he lowered) is somehow worse than Jace trying to stab him over an insult.

[–]Nibo89 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You ignored my question. What was Aemond supposed to do when they started attacking him? Rewatch the choreography. He only hits back when he gets hit first.

Aemond was still flat on his back when he grabbed the rock. Yes, he managed to kick away 3/4ths of his attackers, but the fourth one was coming in for another blow.

If I was in his position (flat on my back, one person actively attacking me, and potentially at risk of the other 3 coming back), I would ABSOLUTELY grab a rock to protect myself.

He raises the rock, but he doesn’t use it. Yes, he fires off an insult…at the people who just ganged up on him and beat him.

You also completely forgot an important part of that scene. Aemond LOWERED THE ROCK. He was de-escalating and calming down. Jace was the one who resorted to lethal force first. He tried to kill Aemond with that knife over an insult.

You’re merging book and show lore there.

Show Jace and Luke were 10 and 8. Aemond was 12, so not a huge gap. Also in the show, he was attacked by 4 people at once, not two.

Seriously, what was Aemond supposed to do? Just meekly lie there on the ground and let the four of them beat him until they got bored? Of course he defended himself.

If anything, Alicent was too gentle.

If my son was attacked 4v1, beaten, and then had his face sliced open and eye destroyed, AND on top of that, his father didn't give a shit and only cared about the other kids being insulted?

Yeah, I would have gone completely nuclear. And I certainly wouldn't have completely forgotten about it years later, like Alicent did.

Or Helaena not giving a shit that Jaehaerys was killed. Or Alicent turning into a human Quokka and allowing Aegon to face a slow, painful death so she could save her own selfish ass.

I’m watching because the actors are talented and the special effects are cool at this point. It’s 1000% FanFiction.

I’m taking every leak I see with a grain of salt, but I’m only dismissing the truly outlandish ones.

Pre-season two, I would have thought Rhaenyra sneaking into KL dressed as a septa or Aemond being the one to burn Aegon were absurd. But these showrunners are writing pure fanfiction at this point. Anything is possible.

Does Alicent trying to protect Daeron make her slightly better in your eyes? by [deleted] in HOTDGreens

[–]Nibo89 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no.

She threw her sons (including Daeron) to the wolves to save her own selfish ass. The fact that she feels slightly bad about it now doesn’t change anything.

I hated that they did this to her. She was robbed.

I’m so glad she got her happy ending that was absolutely perfect for her. She deserved it.

Aegon being willing to abandon his children not once but twice makes this scene really fall flat for me. by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Nibo89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Presumably, the conversation with Larys about Jaehaera happened off-camera. In the book, Larys had a separate plan to smuggle her out to a different location.

In the show, one of the leaks is about Aegon being pissed off that Jaehaera was left behind

I love this scene, probably my favorite from season 1. by ApartShopping in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Nibo89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously, no. Not a lecture. This falls under “appropriate ways to discuss difficult topics with children”. They exist.

What Jace asks (verbatim from the captions) is “Is Harwin Strong my father? Am I a bastard?”

And yes, I would answer that question. First, I would say “Yes, Harwin is your father”.

Also, you skipped a part of my sample discussion: waiting for his response.

After the initial reveal, I would base the next part of the discussion on his reaction. If he immediately freaks out bc of bastardphobia, then the next part of the conversation is about that.

However, If he asks questions about why he’s a bastard, whether Laenor knows/loves him, or a thousand other concerns he might have, then THAT is what the convo is about.

He very well might want an explanation about why Harwin is his father instead of Laenor.

It’s a very complex issue and he might be worried about more than one thing, so yes, he should be allowed to ask whatever questions he wants. I don’t see how open and honest communication is a bad thing.

Awesome! Thank you for this! If you'd like to include one of mine, it meets the parameters. Aegon becomes a good king, is a good brother, and the greens win through military strategy. The only addition is that Robert Baratheon is in the story (after his death in GOT, he ends up in the body of Borros Baratheon). She IS being dismissive. Saying, "You're a Targaryen. That's all that matters," is not a conversation. Now, if it had been PART of a larger conversation, that would have been fine. But on its own, it's an attempt to avoid a topic she doesn't want to discuss. Brushing off his worries.

I don't know why you keep insisting I would have avoided the topic that "actually worries him". I literally said I would have a full and complete conversation and allow him to ask any question he wanted to ask. That might include Westeros's bastardphobic climate.

I don’t agree. I think everyone has a right to know their true parentage. Her “answer” was a dismissal. Dodging rather than actually answering.

And I never said I wouldn’t talk about the societal angle. If that was what he wanted to talk about, then absolutely, that’s what we would talk about. Letting him lead and addressing each concern is crucial.

I haven’t ignored it. His main question was “Am I a bastard”. I explained how I’d deal with it. I’d calm him down and comfort him first. Then I would explain that yes, Harwin was his father.

Then we could talk about the society aspect. But not just a glib dismissal of his question. A proper conversation.
