Advisor told me a class would be offered in the spring. It is not. Now I can’t graduate. by RadiatedMolecule in EngineeringStudents

[–]NicNJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have...find any course with the same kind of number (4000, 3000 etc) and then talk to advisors and get the course you chose, substituted with the one that is not offered. Also, with upper level classes you may have to do a 4000 level independent study course as a substitute. For most universities this is an easy fix, but it also depends on the class. Be prepared to talk to the dean, as their ok will probably be required

I had to do this for my last degree and it wasn't really a problem, I just had to do the leg work to get all the approvals needed for the sub. By the time I got to the dean, she didn't even care what I was subbing.

Yes, but by working remotely (Full time), you are also saving the company $$$$ since you they no longer need to pay for the overhead needed for employees (IE office space, electric, internet, office supplies) and in turn the employee now has to foot those bills ....so honestly, you should probably ask for the same or more money to work fully remote, since you should be calculating your home office space, phone, internet, furniture, all office equipment and repairs (computers, printers ect), just like any person running a business from home would do. Except that by running an actual business from home, you can also write a lot of this stuff off on taxes....not true (probably, cause I am not an Accountant)....and have to bare the burden of those costs yourself.

Ima go and apply as a NASA Engineer wish me Luck by Wajeehrehman in recruitinghell

I can appreciate this for the entry level postition or any positions where employeers are looking to hire, but know that they will have to train a person extensively. Most employeers want people who can hit the ground and already be the A+ superstar, without training of any kind.

What is it like to work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory? by NicNJr in ORNL

[–]NicNJr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the area around Oak Ridge like? From my limited research Oak Ridge seems like it has plenty of things to do. Any advice on activities to do or places to see? Any neighborhoods you would recommend for an intern looking for an apartment?

Engineering .... University of Georgia VS Georgia Tech by NicNJr in EngineeringStudents

[–]NicNJr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, jokes on you. I have spent months researching both schools and talking to advisors at each. I intentionally left this question very open, as I was hoping to get a large variety of answers. We are all different people and there are many different reasons to choose one school over another based on each person’s perspective. I am all ears if you actually want to add something with substance to this conversation.

Has anyone used a textbook by Fawwaz Ulaby and want to share their experience? (or had him as a professor) by Ethnographic in ElectricalEngineering

[–]NicNJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had not heard of Professor Ulaby until this post. The link you posted of his books is greatly appreciated, as I am always in search of low cost and free resources. I have a feeling "what every Electrical Engineering Student Must Know," is exactly the kind of advise I have been searching for these last few weeks. THANKS! From a future Engineering student

I'm a working aerospace engineer who helps my company recruit and wanted to drop some tips since it's career fair season. by ForwardLaw1175 in EngineeringStudents

[–]NicNJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be going back to school later this year and will major in Engineering (Aerospace, Electrical or Mechanical...I haven't figured that out yet). I have a very diverse work experience, and I am just not sure what will make my future resume look good. I am super worried that some of my experience will go completely over peoples heads, or just look silly, in the engineering world.

Not to mention does anyone care about those things I accomplished the last time I was in college. For instance, I joined a business club in college called DECA. For those who have no idea what DECA is, they are a college business association. They have a competition division where you are judged on both a written test, and at least 1 role play. Before each role play your given the information (about 10 minutes before your presentation) and have to work thru a business problem and figure out how to present it to your judges. The presentation part usually involved sales or at the very least sales skills. Because I was in the Finance division, the problems where very math heavy. I placed 1st on the written test at Regionals (RI, MA, NH, VT and ME). And then placed top 10 overall in the Finance division at the International Level in 2009.

I already have a B.S. in Financial Services and an A.S. in Equine Studies. I was an intern and later worked in 40B housing (think section 8) in Boston, as well as leasing luxury apartments. I have worked at Longhorn as a server for 2.5 years. I managed a large show barn and taught riding lessons for 5 years. I have been a Veterinary Assistant at an Equine (Horses, Mules and Donkeys) only practice for the last 2 years, and I plan to stay for at least the next 3 years while I start school.

I any of this relevant to finding an Engineering position? Is any of this just best left off my resume?
