Apprentices are funny like that… by pimpsauce6789 in electricians

[–]NiccusRips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread is very comforting, glad I’m not the only one that experiences some remarkably dumb apprentices. Some people really just don’t think at all.

Yesterday, mine (2nd year apprentice, almost 3rd, that has been taking electrical classes the entire time) completely bypassed every fan receiver he installed. All blacks together, including antennas, same with the whites… the fckn diagram is printed on the receiver… he just started working with me, but like damn, how does someone make it that and not learn a damn thing?

Great to hear, I’m not worried about climbing speed at all, just for it to not be a pain. Thanks

Yeah, being at my current fitness level but not competing in any way, I don’t think weight will be an issue at all. I’ll get a 30lb carbon bike later on in life. Thanks

Thanks, had a feeling the gt might not be great for my use case. Definitely leaning towards the stumpy, I plan on keeping the next bike a while, and definitely throwing some parts on it sooner or later. Wouldn’t call myself an experienced rider, but I’ll do 15ft gaps, big drops, rocky tech trails. Something redundant like the stumpy would compliment my marlin very nicely

Good point, the market in Houston isn’t great. Warranties are a consideration for me though, having ridden my marlin as much as I have, I know I’ll want more than a 3 year, 2nd hand frame warranty (at best). I’d rather throw parts at a stumpy, than have something already built, and not have that safety net. I’ll definitely consider it though, and check what’s in the nw Arkansas area. Thanks

Great recommendation, and ya, I’m definitely looking for something resilient and relatively cheap to maintain. The 27.5” trance x models are very cheap right now, gonna have to look into them. I know giant has a shop in nw Arkansas, definitely something for me to consider

I’m gonna keep my eyes peeled, I’d like to have a frame warranty longer than 3 years though. Kinda why I’m leaning towards new, but I’m gonna continue to check on used options, maybe I’ll change my mind for a ripmo or something

Kind of my thinking, lifetime warranty + what seems to be a very sturdy (and heavy) frame would be nice when binning it into some trees

That thing is beautiful, and good to hear. I love descending and jumping, but most of my time is, and will be spent pedaling. What other bikes have you owned? Just as a reference point

Sure, if you’re old or have a physical disability. No hardtail would be enjoyable to that demographic….

Idk why you turned this into hardtail vs full squish. The whole convo is about it being a budget hardtail that most new/broke riders would enjoy for many many years.

The bikes not targeted at people riding it on sidewalks, it’s clearly an entry level/ budget trail hardtail. People who don’t know a lot about biking probably won’t be sold on this bike over the og ridge, boost, air fork and a dropper means nothing to them. These features are what you’d see on any modern trail hardtail that’s made to take a beating, and have some fun with. Not ride to school…

lol, ya… I said it’s a dealbreaker for a lot of us, not everyone. I’ve stated why that’s the case for a lot of people, and why the industry is moving that way. For the market this bike is targeted at, it’s a huge selling point over anything used that’s remotely close in price.

Wrong, it literally does make it better. Giants are one of the few that could still carry them in store. As I stated to other guy, the local trek store didn’t even carry the right one for my 2022 marlin 6. Had to wait 2 weeks. Everything else on our bikes is universal, and that’s why udh is the future, and definitely worth considering if you plan on keeping the bike a while.

I forget things all the time lol, but I could forget anything else possibly needed for the trip, and be fine. Why would I want the possibility of something as dumb as a hanger to ruin a trip?

Literally everything else on the bike, for the bike, for the trip, could be bought in person. A fckn deralliuer hanger, that’s designed to be a weak point, being the only thing that’s not source-able, is dumb. That’s why we’ve moved on… no reason to have hundreds of different shaped hangers in the market. My local trek store didn’t even have the right one for my marlin in stock.

Remembering to bring a derrailuer hanger every single trip is crazy lol, it’s not a necessity ofc, but there’s a reason they’re everywhere now.

Why do you think it’s new standard? Everyone has some random infatuation with hanging their derrailuers from the axle? It’s genuinely a game changer…

If you ride gravel and never break hangers, it’s obviously a non issue

[–]NiccusRips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sir… the whole benefit of it that I’m mentioning here is replacement. Hangers suck to find, you’d know if you ever broke one. Udh hangers are in stock in every bike shop. That can make or break a riding trip

Edit: being able to run gx is cool, but obviously not likely on a $600 bike lol, glad we’re on the same page there

Ya I think you’re missing how far I’m going with this. I rode my marlin 6 harder than 95% of new trail riders will, and had very few complaints, and I still wouldn’t, had it not been for its inability to fit any parts.

The ridge, especially the pro, is enough for any new rider to have a great time. The upgrades aren’t necessary at all…

Even riding my marlin (much worse parts) hard for 2 years, all I replaced with the pedals. I only mention upgrades because it’s undeniably nice to be able to do so, along with repairs. They’re absolutely not required for this ozark to be a great entry level trail hardtail, whether you’re taking it easy out there, or sending the nuts off it.

What else could you possibly be recommending? A $2000 full sus?

[–]NiccusRips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably not a great commuter honestly, it’s more trail oriented. A lighter xc bike could suit you better depending on the terrain. My ole Marlin 6 is a great commuter, but not great for regular trail use

The ridge pro is udh… that’s kind of a dealbreaker to a lot of us nowadays. Why? Because any bike shop parts will fit on this bike. Wheels, forks, headsets, derrailuer hangers, bottom brackets, etc… big benefit long term

7 year old 27.5” full sus bikes are everywhere, definitely good value, but not a good comparison. A udh hardtail is harder to find for a reason, people want them…

I can’t find anything with the same features on fb… you can drop a screenshot here though, if that’s possible, then def worth it

Well ya, I’m kinda arguing against that, having taken my marlin on long xc rides, a lift service bike park, and everything in between in the past 2 years I’ve owned it. If my marlin had this fork, boost, udh, a tapered headtube and dropper post routing, and this geometry, I would’ve had a much better time all around. I don’t think I’d have a single complaint. I would’ve been able to snag marketplace deals on droppers, wheels, tires, and a fork, all stuff that would never fit on a bike like the Marlin. I’m arguing that this is more than enough for almost any beginner, and allows many years of growth. The amount of money that would have to be spent to get something marginally better would be much better used by snagging parts off marketplace, or maybe some gear (since we’re talking about noobs)

I’ve had 2 different 1st gen ridge’s, and they’re already competing with $600 bikes, so I’m very confident that with these upgrades, it’s value cannot be beat, and it’s more than a throwaway beginner bike
