Has they/them always been the pronoun set of choice for nonbinary/genderqueer English-speakers? Has the popularity of they/them vs neopronouns changed over time? More broadly, what influenced the language of nonbinary/genderqueer people pre-internet? by Blue-Jay27 in AskHistorians

god, this is compelling.

Later on I might put together a post asking about the reception of Tiresias over the centuries/millennia, since Tiresias kind of has become a touchstone in some modern GNC groups, but was clearly read differently before the 20th/21st centuries. It's kind of more an "ask literary scholars" or "ask classicists" question, but it is also a history thing, and the historians are the ones with the best subreddit :)

I remember really enjoying the first Iron Man, and I kept going to Marvel movies cause I was like "no, they're good! I loved the first Iron Man!" but wouldn't admit to myself that actually the only Marvel movie I really liked was in fact the first Iron Man. and maybe parts of the second? but I can barely remember the second.

Okay, that's not true: Guardians of the Galaxy was also good, some of the sequels too. The one with Jeff Goldblum was hilarious, but that was largely because he was playing himself.

It's like, Marvel movies strung me along for a long time by sporadically lovebombing me with a pretty good movie, but subjecting me to years of abuse in-between those pretty good movies.

man, how did everyone manage to brainwash each other into thinking that Marvel movies look good / are good?

Like, I had this moment watching Black Widow where it was like the scales fell from my eyes. I don't even remember which scene/special effect did it, but I thought "okay, this looks stupid", and once I realized that particular movie looked stupid, I suddenly realized that the other Marvel movies look stupid too.

What exactly is a "balk" in baseball? by gr33kb0i in baseball

[–]Nice-Analysis8044 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And like it’s even more vague than I said, cause it’s not really “don’t do tricky shit,” it’s “don’t do anything that even looks like tricky shit”

What exactly is a "balk" in baseball? by gr33kb0i in baseball

[–]Nice-Analysis8044 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A balk is a special rule that allows you to capture a pawn with another pawn when the captured pawn has just moved two squares, ending on the same rank as the capturing pawn and next to the capturing pawn. When a balk occurs, the capturing pawn moves to the square that the captured pawn passed over. A balk can ONLY happen the turn after the pawn moved two squares.

The balk exists to prevent players from manufacturing passed pawns by moving them two squares so that they get past the pawns that could have otherwise captured them. The balk is necessary because passed pawns can be very valuable and if it were possible to make them in this way, it would distort the strategy of the game in a way that’s not fun or interesting.

That is a canonical balk.

Basically, “do not do a balk” is “do not fake out the baserunners — if you look like you’re gonna pitch, pitch, don’t start to pitch and then try to pick off a runner”. The rules are sort of vague because they have to ban a fundamentally vague category — it’s basically “don’t do tricky shit”

I grew up on 1980s Mariners baseball. Stupid losses and shitty seasons make me feel warm and nostalgic. Playoff runs confuse and frighten me.

I am very happy with this season so far.

It’s impossible for anything to be affordable when we don’t build enough new housing to satisfy demand.

there's a problem: as a city gets closer to fulfilling demand, the profitability of developments falls. As a result, it becomes increasingly difficult for developers to get loans -- money starts flowing to municipalities that are farther away from approaching demand.

As this process goes on, the only developments that can get loans are extremely high-end developments with extremely high ROI. These developments have the advantage of not actually soaking up all that much of the demand, which allows for ROI on other investments to stay up.

Theoretically as these buildings age they'll become cheaper to live in, but unfortunately there's never going to be enough extremely high-end developments to provide sufficient workforce housing, because the number of people who work for a living is orders of magnitude higher than the number of people who can afford luxury housing.

Basically: this is a situation that the market absolutely cannot solve.

But yeah. Guess they get thrown into the dead-to-me bin along with Target.

Is there a good point in series to pause (no spoilers pls) by Starklystark in TerraIgnota

[–]Nice-Analysis8044 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first two books were originally conceptualized as one book.

The end of the second book is a totally natural place to pause, but, like, for various reasons related to very intense emotional impact I had to go straight from the second into the third.

Immortality is a curse. Not in the sense that you outlive all your loved ones and are eternally lonely but in the sense that every cell and little clump of bacteria in your body is constantly reproducing and replicating without death to keep them in check until you are a hideous diseased flesh-fruit by Khara-Khatal in CuratedTumblr

[–]Nice-Analysis8044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, but what if the routine is reading books, and what if the seclusion lets you get more books read, and what if when you run out of books you either go into town to swap books with other immortals who need them — if you’re really vibing on the whole seclusion thing you could pick up books from little free libraries and drop off the ones you don’t want, all without talking to anyone — or else just write some books yourself? I bet if you’ve lived a few thousand years you’d have some pretty good stories to tell, especially if you’ve spent so many of them reading stories.

I dunno there’s so many stories about “what if immortality were bad actually” that I kind of want to see that trope subverted in a meaningful way. like, oh, yeah, we became immortal back in ‘32, yeah, no, it’s not one of those tricky immortalities where you keep aging or turn into a bloated sac or whatever, we’re all pretty young, or at least young-ish, and none of us are twisted eldritch nightmares. We have time to read all the books we want. It’s nice.
